What was MINI Thinking?

Why did they cancel electric blue, argueably the best color available, and replace it with that ugly dark blue?

I've always liked the electric blue, and was upset originally when it wasn't offered on the convertibles.

Now that I'm giving the hardtop more thought, I got excited again because I could get electric blue. But now it's gone.

I'll probably stick with white like I've been saying lately, but none of the colors available on the '06 MCS are really "it" for me.

I'm sure this has been covered before...just had to vent.

Let's just hope the new '07 brings a re-worked color pallete with it next fall.

British Racing Green is the only colour with racing blended into the paint

I guess this thread needs a purpose.....

1. Does anyone know why the color was dropped? Not enough demand?

2. Does anyone think MINI is working on a similar (but different) color for the '07MY? I hope so. I bet a non-metallic light-blue would look cool.

Initially, Electric Blue was the most popular color in the MCS. The problem with these bright/happy colors is that they are mostly fads and do not stand the test of time as more conservative colors such as gray, silver, white, etc. I suspect that Electric Blue orders started to dwindle to the point that gave MINI enough of an incentive to ax it. All of a sudden the "hot" color offering of 2002 and 2003 was no more. Ditto for Liquid Yellow, another very risque color.

Reds, Silvers, whites, blacks and to and extent green and blues are colors most people can agree on. Another color that will see the ax soon (possibly) is hot orange metallic in the cabrios.

But one thing I do not understand is why MINI axed Jet Black??? That one needs a deeper explanation.

I suspect the color palette for 2007 will bring a few pleasant and unpleasant surprises, I doubt very much any of the colors in the current lineup will survive the transition to the R56 generation.

Colors are mostly subject to taste. While some people may have sweared about EB others probably hated it. It is very hard to agree on a subjective topic as this.

hey, what about...

Speaking of dropping colors, why did they EVER discontinue Indi Blue? They can try all they want, but Hyper Blue, Purple Haze, and whatever that new blue for '06 is (Space Blue?) will NEVER match Indi Blue in richness and vividness. That color just is awesome. I'm glad that's what I drive!

My wife wishes they still made velvet red...another "rich" color, especially with a white top. But choosing Indi Blue was a no-brainer for me, even if it is a tough one to keep clean. It's my labor of love, keeping it clean.

My dad has a 1999 Mazda Miata 10th anniversary, and side by side you'd swear the colors are the same. Mazda only made that color for that year and that anniversary model...7500 of 'em in the WORLD!

More profit for the dealers. If you want black now you have to pay extra for it.

This week I have had the pleasure to see 2 of the most "rare" MINI colors. Last weekend I saw a Silk Green/Black MC and yesterday afternoon a MINT 2002 Velvet Red/Velvet Red MC. Gorgeous, timeless colors.

Silk Green only lived from March 2002 to January 2003 production, making it the shortest and rarest production color for the MINI. Velvet Red was discontinued at the end of the 2003 model year (August 2003 production) and promptly replaced with the answer no one was asking for :SOLID GOLD METALLIC... GASP!

Solid Gold proved to be a flop and was discontnued at the end of the 2005 model year.

The new Solar Red metallic is nice but it is not a substitute for the classic Velvet Red.

I saw a dark brown MINI a month or so ago. My MA said they were a giveaway in a Hershey's contest, and that there were only 20 or so of them. I have to admit when I saw it I said "now THAT'S a color I'd never buy."

I put EB right up there with the hideous gold. YUCK!

I do wish Indi would have stuck around - My Hyper is close, but I do like the tone of Indi better, and especially think it would have been the best interior color.

Metallic colors are actually $450, not $420.

I beg to differ, kaelaria. If you ever met my MINI, you'd see that the only color that matches her personality is Electric Blue - there was never another choice for me.

As for Solid Gold, I hated it in the showroom, love it on the road. And the fact that Velvet Red is no more is a cryin' shame. I see one occasionally, and it's breathtaking every time.

Let's face it, MINI is still a quirky car when viewed next to the standard road faree - they deserve quirky colors.

Electric Blue is Dead! Long Live Electric Blue!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I think EB was my favorite color I've ever seen on any car.

I guess I would have to agree. Maybe discontinuing colors will help the resale value for that color.

It's definitely not for those who prefer 'stealth.'
But, if you want a head-turning color, EB ain't bad!

Whenever my daughter is the MINI with me, she is always saying "Papa, those people are looking at our car again."

If EB had been available on the MC I'd have gotten it in 03'.

EB, LY, CR are bright, cheerful colors that match the MINI's overall look perfectly. Muted, conservative, grays, blues, silver, etc. make me think MINI has been bought out by Toyota or Honda.

I'm hoping the '07 color line-up will be more interesting.

Breaking radio silence to reply to this one.

EB: The loss of EB is very sad. My favorite MINI color..with the white top/trim <not white wheels though>. Stunning. I was disappointed I couldn't order my 05 MCSC in it...but with the black top I would have had to think long and hard. I chose LY and am very happy.

VR: Classic look..with a white <I'd prefer a more cream white> top I think it's beautiful as is Silk Green.

The early colors like VR,SG,EB and so forth are very similar to colors used on classic British sports cars. The new colors are more "Japanese" aren't they?

My fantasy color now would be the light Grey/Blue that was offered on Jaguar E types and early SL Mercedes. Chrome looks so good against it.

The dark colors aren't for me..make the car look stubby IMO. The loss of Hot Orange is no loss IMO...I had originally ordered Cool Blue but changed it after seeing CB outside on a cloudy day. Looked muddy and depressing to me.

As to why they dropped EB..I can't imagine. I guess they have to "progress" and color evolution is one way they can do they. You'd think with computerized paint operations they could group runs of even the least often choosen colors. Who would care if they had to wait a few more weeks for a run of EB?

But, in a couple years, I'll look for a clean used S hatch in EB/White, and then I'll have the perfect pair.

lol...good point.

I'd assume he meant "more poplular to the general public." Bland automakers like Honda are giving Japanese cars a bad rep I guess.

Just look at Nissan/Infiniti, they have some pretty sweet "non-japanese" colors.
