Surely, there are more experienced folk here than me, but I think it's generally wise to keep from hard driving (exceeding 4k rpms) until after the first 1500 miles.

This has been a topic a few times already. Maybe try doing a 'search' on it
But as per the manual, it states for the first 1200miles(2000km's), vary your speed and gearing, avoid engine speeds in excess of 4500rpm, and not to go over 95mph(150km/h)
Some may say, and have said that it is not necessary to break-in a new car. I say it is, IMO. Just take a loaner car from the dealership or a rental car for example. Seems that every car of that nature that I had, felt like it was ready to keel over. Vibrations, slow to accelerate, weird noises, etc. And there was hardly any mileage on them. Most likely do to the previous users of the car beating the crap out of them.
Cheers,

Ive been driving her hard since day one, its been my experience that this method breaks in the pistons better, as well as makes a better seal with in the engine block. But thats just me. I have done this with all my cars, and except for the usual maintence stuff thats all I ever needed for my cars, never had a mechanical problems. My Honda has 98,000 miles, and before that my GTI had 110,000.

I just got my Cooper last week...I get PLENTY of "satisfaction" out of the car and I haven't had the RPMs above 4K. My point is, I don't think the breakin period is a major inconvenience. City, highway the car accelerates and cruises just fine. Now after the breakin period, I do plan to explore that +4K realm, but for now, I'm perfectly happy! (and probably the streets are safer! )
