I hope they catch both the piece of ***** (unlikely) who stopped and then sped away and the other car if they are in fact two different parties.

I just checked our MoM member list and he does not appear to be someone we know. There are too many MINIs in Miami to count.

I can't tell anything from the car, the pics are pretty low quality. On the positive side, it looks like that tough little car may have saved at least one of the occupants lives. Some crashes are just really bad, nothing could have survived a 90 MPH head on crash into a palm tree and left it's occupants unscathed .

xtreme, I hate to say it... 1.30am in the morning, 1 of them if not both are racing. Probably been drinking too.
Speed kills. Mix it with alcohol, it's over.

It's very unfortunate, I hope his family gets through it ok.

fyi, hitting a tree is worse than hitting another car. I havent heard of too many car accidents in ANY type of car/truck where people walk away after hitting a tree.

So sorry to see this post. Shame on the fleeing vehicle! Another reminder to take the racing to the track and keep it off public streets.

Whoever stopped may have had nothing to do with the crash, may have at first intended to get out and try to help, and then felt endangered by the vehicles speeding past and the narrow width of the shoulder. We don't know the whole story. They may have been the ones who first called 911. Sometimes no one knows what happened.

clover,

nice said, no street racing.

God, I am so sorry for the incident, may God give strength to his family. Sometimes, such a small mistake can cost to our lives.

Too early to die...

Hopefully, they find out what really caused the accident...

Condolences to the family. As a long time Autoweek reader, I remember a short article (soon after MINI intro) about a woman skidding off the road after avoiding a deer, and hitting a tree. The engine submerged as planned, and she was okay. That's one reason I just bought my MCS. Besides, the tree isn't moving at hurricane speeds, unless...

As unfortunate as it was, chances are the crash was a result of driver inability, and not road conditions. Assuming they were both racing each other, it's unlikely a track would have prevented this crash. Though presumably the palm tree wouldn't have been there... Keep it safe, whether you're racing on a track or on the street, it's still dangerous.

rustyboy, I am making no assumptions. Having been involved with the MINI world since '02 and seeing a variety of sad stories, I still maintain that for those wanting to race at high speeds, they need to pay for track time and race their MINIs where there are people ready to help them if they crash.

Racing on tracks designed for high speeds is definitely safer than on the streets. Street-racing is not condoned by myself and such discussions are forbidden on NAM, per the Site Guidelines, rule #5:

LEGAL
Posts relating to street racing, excessive speeding, or violations of other laws are prohibited. If you want to race, take it to a legal venue.

I agree 100%, just saying, you have to be just as cautious on the track. Too many people think because they're on the track they can do anything, and often times get themselves into trouble. Every teenager ought to take a racing course at their local track to learn how to control a car under various high speed conditions. It's definitely made me a much better driver.

It is often said here on NAM that the very best mod is driving school, and I think we are agreed on that point, Nick. Thanks for your comments.

AND CLOVER STARTS ROARING LIKE A WILD LION , AND REMINDS NAM COMMUNITY "HOW MUCH HE HATES STREET RACING" .

Hey Clover,

I really agree with you on this matter and absolutely opposed to street racing. I also agree with rustyboy that the importance of keeping the car under control instead of the car controlling the driver, if that was his point, and if "rustyboy is a he, otherwise would have been "her point", which is pretty obvious that "rustyboy" is a male (got it from the boy ending).

It is kind of crazy, isn't it?

I'm an 18 year old (almost 19) male who used to drive at speeds i'd care not to mention. Then I took a driver safety course, learned how to control the car at high speed, and toned down my street driving quite a bit. I still drive spiritedly, but I make it a point to not drive in a way that endangers other people's lives. If I make the decision to speed, I make sure it's done in a location with no other cars on the road.
