Another mileage ?

This topic has been around for awhile but I'd like to ask a slightly different way.

Ignoring things like coasting, a down hill run, back wind, etc:

At what speed/gear would/should you get the best MPG, and what would it be? I know the 'official' numbers but I'd like real numbers. For arguments sake let's say you are in a non-windy weather condition and it's a flat road.

I don't know but I'm guessing around 50-55 mph in 6th gear would see the best mileage.

Thanks,

I don't have an S, but my cabrio does pretty well at 65 with the cruise on in 5th. I think I was showing 35-40 MPG when doing that. If I go to rush hour speeds of 75-80 then I drop into the 25-30 range.

This is just a guess but for my MC I'd think about 40-50 in 5th get would get the best mileage.

Supposedly 45-50 is the point at which air resistance overtakes tire friction in terms of 'frictional' losses for most vehicles. Given our dear MINI's brick-like aerodynamics, it's probably closer to 40.

I find it’s not the speed you drive that produces the best mileage as much as where you drive.

In town with stop and go with speeds of 20 to 45 MPH I get up to 25 MPG.

On the highway between 65 and 80 plus MPH I have gotten as much as 37 MPG.

On the Dragon between 20 and 60 MPH I get 7 to 10 MPG, but this is when I’m the happiest regardless of the MPG.

But remember that with the gearing changes in the '05-'06 S 6MT, your mileage may vary. 6th gear runs at higher RPMs in the newer cars than it did with the older '02-'04 MCS with the taller gearing.

With the '02 gearing, our MCS seems to get the best mileage in the 45 mpg range in 6th. I've seen over 40 mpg this way. The idea is to stay at the lowest rpm without lugging the engine. In the higher gears, that means over 2k rpm.

Agree with the Dragon comment. Tires don't last all that long either for some reason.
