You will recall that the Norweigan ship Tricolor went down in the English channel Dec. 14th, testing the underwater protection on 3000 brand new Saabs, Volvos and Bimmers 20 miles between Dunkirk and Dover. The Tricolor was bound from Zeebrugge, Belgium, to Southampton, England where it would have added som Minis to its trans-Atlantic cargo. It was unceremoniously struck by the Karibe in thick fog; the Karibe which managed to limp into Antwerp.

Strike 2! The sunken Tricolor, a 3000 Ton cargo ship, was then hit by the cargo ship Nicola on Dec.16; Nicola was able to limp into port.

Strike 3! Then on New Year's Day, the Turkish tanker Vicky hit the Tricolor spilling 70,000 Tons of kerosene into the English Channel.

Strike 4! So tonite from BBC and Reuters comes a report that a tug has collidied with the wreck, releasing fuel oil still trapped in the Tricolor's hold.

Is there a message here about buying European cars? Make sure they are insured.

Tom

Geez, you would think that a big Orange object lying on its side, surrounded by buoys and beacons would be a little easier to detect!

Not to mention, aren't there ships positioned around the Tricolor so as to prevent this?!?!?!

Its a sad reality that, as much as we would like to think competent people who, after all, "know more than most of us" are in charge of things, one finds over time that they are most likely no more competent, or smarter, than the next fellow. Even with all the gadgets and gizmos, the tendancy toward human error is overwhelming. I don't really have a problem with that since I am, myself, a goofball. The tragic thing is that the stakes can get pretty high nowadays. Hitting a boat can be amusing...this kind of environmental/ecosystem damage really isn't. Multiply that if folks got injured. By the way, are they ever going to move/salvage the TRICOLOR or just leave it there indefinitely? I don't know these things 'cause I'm in "land-locked north" Texas.

I think they've just created the most expensive artificial reef ever!

Realizing this is one of the more sobering parts of becoming an adult, I think. Actually, the moment at which someone realizes this is probably as good a definition of the cusp between childhood and adulthood as any. Once you figure out that there isn't any magical process by which you eventually become as omniscient and omnipotent as everyone seems when you're a kid, you are then forced to figure out how to actually do something with yourself instead of just waiting for things to happen, waiting to pass go and collect $200, so to speak.

Sorry to wax philosophic on such a goofy thread, but I got thinking about this for some reason... This thread had pretty much descended to off-topic status anyway, eh?

Yes L.mini there was. Someone posted from the states on MCO saying his MINI had gone down on the Tricolor.

He had been stationed in Bahrain and was having his MINI shipped to the states when it went down.

My mini was booked on the Tricolor, but the accident happened before arrival to Southhamption. I too had read the post about the Mini that was lost in the sinking.
