How much better does the mileage get after break-in?

Just filled up a partially filled tank. ---> 30.6 mpg <---. 92 octane @ Speedway (both times). CVT. At 590 miles right now , not even through break-in. Will it get better?

Math:

Trip distance since last fillup/gallons filled

I also compare it to the regular gas mileage, where my current mileage is subtracted from the mileage when I last filled up. No 10ths, so it's "less" accurate - 30.602 OR trip mileage 30.662

My computer ran out of battery power - left power brick at work, so I cannot pull the excel file off and figure out what I paid to drive the MINI per mile.

Who needs hybrids!

i just got my mcs and my trip comp says that i am getting 20mpg average , this seems very low, also considering that i haven't been stomping on the gas pedal, and have been keeping the tac bellow 4500, but it is city driving!

I do a mix of City/highway (20%/80%), where the highway is split between a nice stretch of 50mph, and 55mph. My OBC was moderatly accurate, steadily climed up from the mid twenties to the "high" 30's (31.9).

Also, I have a MC, which gets slightly better gas mileage than the MCS.

In the long run, it would take a few years to feel the difference in mpg, cost-wise.

My gas mileage is getting worse... thats because I was driving easy during breakin... now I am having fun and exploring its limits... my previous tank was 27.5 mpg... this last fill up was 25....
After break-in you can expect better mileage as the engine loosens up... thats if you can keep your foot out of it...

Yes, your mileage improves after the engine breaks in, urkie. *****, take it easy with the lead foot...LOL!

I've never gotten as low as 20 mpg in my MCS! I have gotten as high as 37 on occasion, though. I average 25-29 city, 30-35 highway!

i've been getting 25 to 27 mpg on the my mcs (using odo numbers
combined w/ #gallons pumped).

these numbers are 50% city/50% highway w/ AC on. (and a good bit
on one of those tanks was zipping around on the annapolis by the bay
run w/ dcmm in low gears to stay in the powerband)

finally got past the breakin mileage this last week.
i'm expecting better numbers when i fill up tomorrow
since most of this last tank was done w/o AC.

previous experience w/ trip computers
shows that this method works better for mpg calcs.

On my first full daily-driving tank of gas when mileage was at 1350 (roadtripping excluded, since that was the first thing we did with Alexander when we picked him up) I got 401 miles with a 13.4 gallon fillup, so roughly 29.5 mpg. That was 75% city & 25% highway driving, much better than my 03' Jetta (automatic).

I plan on tracking as I go along, for curiousities sake. Good luck breakin' in!

On my 2nd tank of gas with my new MC (the first time I filled up, the dealer had it full when I bought it) I had a trip from Columbus, Ohio to St Louis on it via US 40, and got just shy of 500 miles on the tank and an average of 36 mpg. The next couple of tanks were down to 31-32 mpg, but that was cruising at 80-90 mph most of the time with the AC on and a passenger and his luggage.

It should improve as the engine breaks in, but I was very happy that my first tank of gas got 36 mpg, hopefully if I'm careful after the engine gets broken in I can achieve 38-40 mpg, but that will require a soft touch woth my right foot, and low rpms.

Don't know about the MINI (it is my first), but with other recent new cars on synthetic oil, the mileage will improve through the first 10,000 miles as the engine completes the break-in process (and you thought break-in was only for the first 1,250 miles????). If you are lead footing it, the mileage is less, however (duh).

When I got my MC 2 years ago, I was not impressed with the MPG. But after break-in, which only took a week, I noticed an improvement. Not much but some. Then as I put more miles on, I do 600+ a week, it really started to get better.

I know get 38+ MPG. I do 95% highway. I cruise at 65-70MPH. I never spin my tires at launch, but I also hardly ever shift below 5000 rpm.
When coming off on-ramps I run up to speed in 3rd, then just go to 5th.
4th gear will never wear out in my MC.

The odd time I take the slower highway into the city, mostly 50 to 55MPH limit, I get over 40MPG.

When I play on the gravel back roads, it dumps big time

Like someone else said, who needs a hybrid

I live in the country so most of my driving is highway, getting 34 to 35 mpg. In town around 29 to 30. Not a lot of stop lights. On the interstate I wind it up goin down the ramps, so I'm running around 80 by the time I reach the bottom. Averaging around 31 to 32 on the interstate.
