My parents (I'm a baby, I know...) just got their first insurance bill after picking up the MCS and in addition to the high insurance that goes along with having a 17 yr. old driver, it put a $4,000/yr. charge on the MINI! Are they nuts?!!! Any other experiences similar to this?

Are you listed as the primary driver of the MINI?

Do you have as many cars as you have people in the family with drivers permits?

If yes to both then maybe I can see this being the case. Have the insurance company remove you from the primary driver slot on the MINI. If the MINI is not driven that often then you can also rank it as a non-daily driver to save some money.

Yikes. That's even worse than mine. If you're saying $4K (U.S) a year, that works out to about 6,172.49 (CDN) per year. OUCH! But ya gotta admit..............IT IS worth it. To me anyways.
Cheers,

NO....at least not in Hawaii. Insurance on MC is cheaper than MCS (not by much).
FYI...cost to insure MC is $800/year full coverage less the roadside assistance

Insurance... Bunch of snakes.

I am going through the same thing with my insurance company. They insisted on adding my daughter to the coverage, despite her being 700 miles away at college with no car. This added over $1000 per 6/months for a 5 year old BMW!

I finally got them to exclude her from coverage. Since skAlex probably can't do that, you should make sure you are listed as "Pleasure" driver (certainly the case with MCS). You should also make sure you are getting discounts for good grades and driver training if they apply.

Finally, get your parents to check their credit report. My company has increased my premium based on a faulty credit report which showed me to be a credit risk. It'll take a while to get that straighted out.

Scary to think what'll happen when I add my MCS to the policy.

Good luck.

GEICO has told me that my insurance will only go up about $100 a year when we get the Mini. That brings my annual bill to roughly $1100 a year for a 2000 Jimmy and 2003 Cooper in Northern VA. And that's carrying the same coverage as my other vehicle ($500 deductables on all but comprehensive which is $0)

When we replaced a 1989 Scorpio (value $1500) with the MINI our insurance went up $30/6 mos, about 10%.

Dude, 17 and a MCS? Not sure whether to congradulate you or stew in my own jealousy. If you want a car this nice, that young, you have to pay the piper I'm afraid.

Oh, I forgot what the insurance can do to the young! Just last week I had my Birthday - 44 - and I almost caught myself feeling down! Now I realize that my insurance may not go up at all from my current car!

Oh, Yea, Baby, I like being old!

I thought the same thing when I picked up my Cooper in August , the premium reflected only a $12.00 increase for 6 months over my previous car, an Eagle Talon.
Last month I got my renewal, right after the 5 mph crash test results came out, and the collision portion of my coverage took a big jump !

When I got insurance on my MCS they did not even have a listing. So I started one it was for a BMW Mini cooper S. With the BMW name on it my insurance went up 1600$ a year. I dropped a 1998 S10 and added the mini just to give you a little info. I called when I got the bill and let them know they could keep the bill cause I was not going to pay it. Long story short 45min on hold and trimed 1700$ off my bill. It is not listed as a BMW Mini any more and I think they came down off what they were smoking. Progressive Insurance.

Hehe i love my old car that only has collision and not comprohensive insurance. That and I have USAA for insurance and you can't get cheaper then that. Telemarketers call my house and when they are told we have USAA they just hang up cause they know that can't a lower rate.

Hey Sk...

When I was under the auspices of my mum her insurance (State Farm) allowed me to drive without actually being listed--i.e. we paid nothing for me. That said, I was only covered (same coverage as my mother) until after my first accident (which, knock on wood, has never happened). They would take care of the first one but my mother would then have to have me listed as a driver. We maintained this system from the time I was 16 until just last week (22 now) and it even counted when I had my own car away at college.

Did you ask about good student discounts, driver safety courses, etc?

Our insurance is ~900.00 per year on the Mini S.

Not to rub it in... Just to illustrate.

Officially seconding that conundrum...

although I do think that driving around a clunker that routinely stalls, leaks oil, spontaneously looses windshield wipers, smokes, sputters, backfires and leaves you stuck out-of-car due to magically sticking door handles builds character. Part of me wants to feel bad for the high school set who will never know what it is to frantically fuss about with the ignition on a hair-pin turn after a cut-out robs them of their power steering
~Kelley, again

That is crazy!!! I'm 33 so maybe the rate hike has to do with your age, but what I can tell you is that my MCS is exactly $2 per year CHEAPER to insure than my 2002 VW Jetta TDI was.

Age has a lot to do with it. Also, if you are the primary driver, they will soak you for insurance. Check with the insurance co. They often give discounts for young people for things like taking a drivers ed class, getting good grades, etc.
I signed up with Geico and they gave me a pretty recent rate of $1,120/year. This was a few hundred cheaper than the lowest quote I could find. Thank the Lord I'm finally over 25...what a great discount that is!! See...getting older isn't so bad after all!
