Last MINI service

I am bringing my 2003 MCS in for its last service. I am at 46k miles. I purchased the extended warranty to 50K miles.

What should I have the dealership look at while i am in for my last inspection?? Please help, i dont want to hit 50,001 miles and have something go out that could have been covered underwarranty!

Thanks in advanced!

In your owner's manual documentation leather folder (I believe it is the warranty booklet) there is a comprehensive list of items that the dealer goes over at each specific service/maintenance interval. I believe the 45K mile service that you are getting done is the most expensive and comprehensive of them all.

Make sure to write down a list of items that you think need to be looked at or you feel are not working correctly. After that is pretty much luck after the warranty has expired. You can only do so much to prevent a part breakdown but you can't predict what problems you will have post-warranty period.

Have you looked into an aftermarket extended service contract? I think you need to get that done before your factory warranty runs out.

Interesting... I just had my car to the dealership for some recall issues and I asked the svc. manager if there was anything specifically that needed to be checked for 45K (I was at 45.5). He said the only thing he'd check, if he were I, was the AC microfilter. Nothing terribly comprehensive about that...

I never quite understood the extended warranty to 50K. The factory warranty goes to 50K. The maintainence warranty goes to 36K. Sounds like the extended warranty might get another oil change? If you don't mind, how much did they charge you for this?

My dealer charges $420 for the 1 year scheduled maintenance extension (Which coincides with the end of the 4 year/50K mile warranty).

New BMWs come with a full 4 year/50K mile warranty and 4 year/50K mile free maintenance instead of the 3 year/36K plan offered on MINIs.

Like I said, the 4th year maintenance looks not only for an oil change but for other items.

DiD had his 45K mile done a looooong time ago. He would be the person to ask.

I think it was another $940 to extend the 36k to 50k and it covered brake pads and rotors, which i had changed at 23k miles. It paid for itself.

Wouldn't the regular non-$940 warranty have covered this at 23K miles? Why would you have need the extention to have this done at 23K?

Maybe I missed something?

That is absurd!

Brake pads and rotors are already covered under the 3 year free maintenance plan provided that their wear patterns are "within MINI specs".

We just got our pads are rotors replaced for free in my '02 Cooper CVT with 30K miles. The front pads were pretty worned out and the dealer went ahead and replaced the rotors as well. Good as new.

Tires are not covered by MINI but the the manufacturer of the rubber. Tires come with separate warranties.

But I am afraid you were taken to the cleaners The brake pads and rotors are indeed covered by the 3 year FREE scheduled maintenance, provided that wear patterns of these components are within MINI specs. This is written in the warranty/maintenance booklet that came with your car!

I got the extended service warranty before I hit 36,000. since then I have had all four Brakes done, Pads and rotors. From what I understand it pays for the 45/50,000 mile service (which i got yestreday). IMHO it has paid for itself. I've also had the clucth replaced. But i think that falls under the normal 4yr/50,000 warranty.

50,028 miles and still going.

golden_child,

what was done for the 45/50,000 service? I am getting that done tomorrow. Just wondering what was done on your car.

Had the Inspection 2 service done, which is a long list of stuff. You can check that out on the miniusa web site under owners lounge. they replaced a steering alignment sensor, control arm bushings and fixed a few rattles and some squeaking. But that was about it. I can take a look at my service report later and see what else they did.

IMO if you have a concern about anything talk to your service rep and have him check it out. This might be your last chance without having to pay for it.

Make a list or you might forget stuff when you walk into the dealership.

Some MINI dealers must have incredible salespeople. Any one who can sell a 1year/14,000 mile warranty to cover what's already covered under the 4 year 50K warranty for $940 deserves an academy award....even if you do get the 45K service which no one seems to know what is!!

I guess if you don't get to 45K miles in 4 years you don't even get the benefit of the extra service.

My recommendation would be to put the $940 in a bank account, (if you financed it with the car it'll be well over $1,000). It'll draw a bit of interest. When your car needs something the extended warranty would have covered, use some of the money from this account.

My 03 MCS is 26 months old. Just turned 50,000 miles last night after leaving the dealership 7 miles back. I was lucky enogh to get my extedend service for ~$600.00. I posted on the thread as well quoting a cost of 895.00. I was lucky enough to make some call and get a better deal.

Here is a link to a previous thread about this inspection. I think someone said inpsection 2 costed him/her right around $350.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ght=inspection

So, 350.00 + brake pads and rotors at all 4 corners. I think I made out ok.

Inspection II

I'm trying to figure out what is a reasonable cost for Inspection II. So, I've read this thread and this one:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ght=inspection

Now, I'm totally confused. First, is there a list of items which should be covered during the Inspection on this site or another one? I printed the list referenced for BMW but would rather have a current official MINI II list.

I have an '03 Cooper born 1-10-03 with 55838 miles and the computer saying 600 til next service, which makes an avg of 1900 miles/month. These are predominantly highway miles as I've been from central IL to Lake Superior, GA coast, FL gulf coast, and just got back from a 5000 mile road trip to CA and back, and innumerable trips to Chicago (250 miles -- some to the dealer) and within the greater midwest.

Nothing about my service seems to match what you all have been saying. At 45K, I had an oil service, which was the 4th because I paid for an extra one at 5K. In addition to oil, I had a couple of light bulbs changed and the passenger window motor replaced because I'd had intermittent failure.

I paid $500 for ext maintenance warranty between 36 and 50K.

When I asked what the charge would be for II, I swear the service manager said $750. So, I started looking for reliable service here and found someone who has a good rep for BMW and Mercedes work and who claims he has a MINI tech manual and has worked on a few. I haven't asked him for an estimate for II service because I want to have the right list for him to use for $/item.

As for brakes, when the local guy rotated wheels/tires at 49K, he reported about 60% left all around on the original equipment. Does this sound reasonable?

At this point, I think there are more non-specific rattles. And, I'm getting close to new Bridgestones or something different. The only thing I know that needs to be fixed is the back roof window screen is off its track.

So, any advice or pointers about Inspection II from those who have been there? Should I take a chance on the local guy if he charges less or drive to Chicago and pay more or ... ? Can't do it myself, darn ... Thanks.

yes, so what would be a reasonable $$$ for service II? that is, the one after 36k miles, which is when our factory service warranty expires. my brother's been asking me about this, as he's at 34k currently.

should he get it extended to 50k? or bank the $$$ for now and pay out-of pocket when whatever needs-fixing needs fixing?

Inspection Service II @ 28,000 miles

When did you reach your second service?
Mine will be just about at 28,000! and surely the 3rd one won't be "free" as it'll be out of its maintenance contract by that time.

ODO passed 22k this week; service *countdown* reads 5800. and noting that given my mostly-highway-speeds travel it may not reach 0000 until 6k driven.

For those of you "drive-hard" owners, did you have brakes/rotors replaced at your second service? How common is that? I would expect my pads to last 40k the way I drive (downshifting to slow well before applying brakes and only when necessary).
