Programable feature for Central Locking

The manual says that there is a feature that will automatically lock your doors again if you don't open them within 2 minutes of unlocking by the remote. Anybody have this feature enabled?

It's not enabled on my MINI, but it would seem handy if you unlock by mistake as you put the keys away as you walk away.

I would be interested in hearing opinions as to whether this is a valuable and worthwhile feature, or if there are downsides that I haven't thought of.

Thanks.

I have that on my 04'. If I unlock and forget, or get busy in the garage, the car will relock itself. It does not reset the alarm, but will lock the doors. Many people probably have it, and never knew.

I'll have to check that on the MINI - haven't seen that in action yet, but my Pilot has that feature. It's come in handy on the occasions that you click the Unlock button putting the keys in your pocket (and it probably happens more than you think it does, but you never notice it cuz you use the clicker to unlock the car when you come back!)

That feature was set on my MCSC when I bought it. I had the fear of working on my car in the garage, leaving the keys in it and being locked out. I had it disabled, along with the self locking at 10mph feature.

This feature is enabled by default on MINIs so you have to ask for it to be disabled by the dealer. I have it on my Jet Black MCS and I made sure it was enabled before I took official delivery. Very handy when you unlock your doors, then run back into the house when you forget something.

I am going to have this feature disabled. Twice now I have had the car lock itself while detailing. I shut the doors while working on the outside, then it locks itself. Thankfully I have kept the keys in my pocket, yet I often leave the keys inside while working on it.

Hollis3,

That's exactly the kind of thing I'm trying to avoid. But, if we unlock using the key instead of the remote, it won't re-lock, right?

I believe the intent of that feature is not to self lock the doors after just closing them. It only works if you hit the unlock button on the remote, and then don't open the doors. If you open the doors, it cancels this feature. Not easy to lock keys in car that way.

I have it enabled, and when I work on my car, I always unlock with the toggle inside, then I don't have to worry about it. I like the feature generally, but I don't know how practical it really is. I usually leave mine unlocked accidentally when I walk away from the car after a drive, and I don't unlock the door to get out with the remote, so it doesn't really serve me that well. Not an annoyance, but not really all that valuable.

I have found that 05DSMCS and eMINI are correct. If using the toggle or the key, it does not automatically lock. But if I drive up, get out of the car, using the door to unlock, then walk away - the doors lock. It also does as Elon points out - locks if you don't open the door.

Interesting. I don't know that I've ever walked away without locking. I'll have to try that to see what happens.
