buying process question

We've been bitten by the mini bug but I can't really determine if we can afford one until I work through my taxes and do some budgetary calculations for the coming year. However if we're getting one it's clearly advantageous to get the order in the system. So I was just wondering, what does it take to get the order going and what are the consequences of not taking delivery of it? Is it something like $500 down and you're out the $500 if you back out? Or do you essentially pay everything up front even before you have the car?

Thanks.

It depends on the dealer, everyone is different....

However the most common process is $1000 when you order the car as a deposit of fully refundable. Typically that $1000 goes toward your down payment if you are financing the car...
