R50/53 Mini Wannabees??
Mini Wannabees??
Have any of you have this happen?
I have met a few men (I am a female) and they find out I own a Mini. They then proceed to tell me the Minis history etc, making comments like "You don't know the history" I tell them I do, and they continue on, basically giving me a lecture. This has happened to me twice, with guys I just met. I wonder if they would tell a guy this info. I find it strange, and I can only think they are wannabees, but can't buy one for themself for whatever reason.

At least your lucky enough to run into people who know half-a-something about them. That's rare in my neck of the woods.
Sounds like they're trying to impress you with how knowledgeable they are

I too am a female MINI owner, but I have never met anyone (male or female) who knows anything about MINIs - past or present. I'm not sure which is worse...having men tell you the history of mini that you already know or having them ask you idiotic questions because they have no clue.
its worse for guys to think women dont know about mini, or any car for that matter and it's history..
i'd say its just egoticism of your male friends... who think they can impress u with their car knowledge
but in the end who knows.. it could be just jealousy!

MINI Wannabees... sure, they're everywhere...
Wherever there a soccer moms losing sleep, wherever there are SUV drivers just plain tired of the pretense, wherever there are autocrossers clipping cones, wherever there are Toyota drivers dieing of bordom... there are MINI Wannabees.
Pity the poor saps... they're stuck in a five year loan and a lifestyle that is so 90's. When you meet them... give 'em some slack, there but for your good judgement, style and your sense of excitement-- go you.
Dogspeed.

I have had this happen to me twice and I am a male so I do not believe it this is a gender specific issue. Though I do have to answer "what is that" or "where is the rest of the car" from people most of the time. However being in a city that is known for its European charm there are a lot of transplants from overseas that know the mini very well. The last time this happened was from a man who has an original restored and lives locally.
This is a classic male communication pattern. I highly recommend reading Deborah Tannen's books. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060959622). They are very illuminating. There's a whole section in this book discussing the pattern (lecturing) you just observed.
