I was hoping to get some help on our R52 2007 Mini Cooper S Convertable side walk edition. It was given to us a a project and we were told it would not start and the negative terminal was disconnected. For the life of me I cannot figure out where the negative terminal goes. I know it needs to be connected to the block but I cannot find where it goes. I purchased two service manuals and of course this model was not in any of them. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.
The little box is the posotive side of the battery cable. The ground mount is usually not far from the battery.
Your battery under the windshield or in the back?
Yep, that’s the positive jump starting/charging post on the supercharged models. Not sure if it’s on the regular models as the battery would be right there in the engine compartment. It also comes in handy to power the electrical so you can unlock the doors and hatch/trunk when your battery is dead and locked in the back.
The cabrios, and some early hatches, don’t have the emergency cable release under the back seat to get to the battery when there’s no power and using that post to power up the door locks and trunk release is a lot easier than having to go through the back seat opening to find the release handle. Especially if the trunk is full of stuff.
That cable might go between the starter and the jumper terminal, but someone one else should be able to confirm where it goes.
I'm pretty sure that the cable you are holding in your hand goes on the large lug of the starter solenoid........I could be wrong, but I remember it was on my car. There is only one negative cable on the engine if I remember, it's on the passenger side of the engine and it's connected to the frame rail and the aluminum motor mount
Be careful to check it with a multimeter. Mini’s have a million ground connections. Mine have several wires grounded right next to the transmission mount frame. However, that wire does look pretty big, which indicates a high power application (Like a starter). Also mine too, has the engine ground on the passenger side motor mount frame.
