Possible damage aside, how do you know it’s an LSD?
They weren’t available from the factory before ‘05. Of course the trans could have been swapped, or had an aftermarket LSD installed, but has the yard provided any good info or pics to know if it really is an LSD?
Not a stupid question, I would ask the same. As said it's buried in the gearbox and the inner cv joint would have to break the side of the gearbox really to risk damage to it I think
It turns out that it's not an LSD , however they have a other one from an 05 that had 144k on it.
From what I've found here on this forum these LSDs don't have clutches and don't wear out. Seems like a good deal for 450 but things aren't always what they seem. Any comments or advice welcome
Getting the code off of the transmission is always better, but I would run at least run the VIN to see what the original car came with. Any ‘05, ’06 R53 or ‘05 - ‘08 R52/Cabrio S would show option 2TA or S2TA depending on the format the decoder uses.
I used a Felpro rear main seal in my car, plus I used Quaker State full synthetic 75-90 gear oil along with one bottle of friction modifier for the LSD added to the trans for the LSD. Install the friction modifier first
What about the input shaft seal on the diff Best to leave it ? I didn't think the lsd needed a feiction modifier . What did you use ?
I'll be swapping the clutch that i just installed 6 months ago from my old diff

If the LSD is gear based and not clutch based, no need for the friction modifier. I used Lucas gear oil in my transmission. Seems to work really well with the syncros.
Should I leave the input shaft seal alone or replace it . Also I'll be moving the Valeo clutch I just put in my current diff a short time ago, to the new diff . Can I reuse the guide tube or do I need a new one
I replaced all the seals on my box, 2 driveshafts seals and input seal. I kept the guide tube as it was in good condition and bearing slid easy. Small smear of grease on the tube to help the bearing is always good
