Odd Power Steering Problem

I am having a power steering problem that I have not heard of before.

I have a 2006 Mini R50 (left hand drive) with a lot of miles on it. I have replaced the power steering pump about 4 times.

The last time, the pump had the following problem. When starting in the AM, the power steering started up with no problem. But if it sat for a bit after being turned off, like if I went into a store, when I returned there was no power steering. The next morning, it was fine again. One other point, it never failed once it started, even with a long drive.

No problem, I thought. Time for a new pump. I got a rebuilt pump and it immediately began doing exactly the same thing. So I am trying to track down what is going on. I have replaced the 100 Amp fuse and cleaned the ground point behind the fuse box under the hood, which seemed to help briefly. I have checked the battery and alternator for voltage and they both seem fine.

Soon after a new problem emerged . I got the “trifecta” (ABS, DSC and tire pressure lights all on) which cleared as soon as I tracked down a bad wheel speed sensor in the left front. I don’t think it is related, but I thought I would mention it.

PS fluid is fine and there are no leaks.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have heard that the pump itself can store fault codes, but I don’t think my iCarsoft i910 can query them.

How about the power steering fan? If it's not working properly the pump(s) could easily be overheating.

The pump gets a wake-up signal from the alternator and will not turn on unless it sees this.
A weak alternator or a bad connection to the pump may be causing your issue.

Yep, check the battery. When my pump started to fail it did the on/off thing then failed completely.
