Here in the UK, same issue with my R53 (03) the PSP, carbon build up, the first issue was battery drain, then it came with the pump, would run on (distinct hum) with ignition off, until the battery was physically disconnected. I fitted a new pump, as the UK BMW (head up their A.hole) would not recall or replace.
After 40,000 miles of driving on the newish pump, never had any further issues.

PS pump Recall doesn't apply anymore. This car is too old (2002).

Nervos- Would you mind explaining in detail to a someone who is new to working with electronics (me) what exactly you were doing when you were bench testing you pump? It looks like pins 1 and 2 are both hooked up to the positive source in your Instagram post, correct? I used a 12V battery to connect to the terminals on the pump, so everything is getting the same voltage. I tried connecting pin 1 to positive and pin 2 to negative and vice versa, but that made no difference. I had the main power leads connected directly to the battery + to + and - to -.
I'm trying to understand if maybe my method of testing this thing is wrong, or if there is another problem on the board to deal with.

I have received the new motor armature from MTec today. Fast shipping!

You can apply any voltage in the range 12..14V. No need in different voltage, same one works for all the wires. -12V goes to - on a big socket, +12V goes to + on a big socket and pins 1 and 2 of the small socket (pin 1 is closer to the big socket).

Here the thick white wire is '-' ; thick yellow, thin yellow and thin green ones are all +12V. Make sure your battery is in good condition and charged, it draws pretty good current, esp at start.

In the case if you want to replace the shaft seal on the pump. It is 10x22x5 mm seal.

I've finally re-assembled and re-installed the pump. Even tested it on the vehicle and purged the air off the system (without starting the engine, since.... the engine is not even there yet!). More details:

@Nervos , Although I'm not having any PSP issues; I also appreciate the detailed images and info you've provided to help the OP sort this stuff out.
When I bought my (ex) wife my '04 Mini R53 (brand new 3mi/OD) it was registered in both our names, Mini issued a recall on the PSP & fan soon after. We had that done at the dealer in Spring of '05.
Two years later ('06/'07), 'received another PSP recall notice. Had that done at the dealer as well.
When the lease was up ('08), we bought my wife an FX35 and signed the Mini under my name alone. In late Summer of (2010), I received yet another PSP recall notice (WTF??).... So I went in and took advantage of the free recall.
Of course I knew it was just a ploy to get me in there to rack up an additional service charge ($2,500), bill. Which I rejected.
Point is: I had 3 PSP's installed under recall, with never having any issues. While I'm reading some posters being denied recall due to age/millage.(?).

I have bookmarked this thread.....I'm sure the day will come when it may serve me well.
Thanks!

Correction. The 1/8" (3 mm) thickness O-ring is fine for the motor housing (the big orange one), but it is too thick for the oil pump. Diameter is fine, but the thickness must be thinner. I'd say it should be 1/16" (2 mm). Just FYI.

Nervos thank you so much for your tutelage throughout this thread! Alas, I have bailed on my attempt to get my constantly running pump going. I could not get it to work on the bench and then, finally, a Dorman pump appeared on RockAuto, so I jumped on it. The reman'd Dorman unit is in the car now and it is working great. I will be returning the motor armature to M-Tech for a refund. I wish I could have got it running, but my appetite for learning electrical systems is quite low, so I gave up quickly.

This thread will be a good resource to anyone in the future who is interested in rebuilding their own pump.

Any chance that removing the pump and blasting it out as well as I can with electronic cleaning spray will help in any way? Getting a new pump right now is proving to be difficult! The Dorman pump seems to be sold out everywhere and all the other options are pretty pricey. I'm planning to sell the car ASAP once the new pump is in, so splurging on a high end pump isn't necessary.

Is there a chance that some problem with the PS fan could be causing the PS pump to stay powered on?
i have the same problem with my power steering pump-

Thats a bad pump or a bad fan? Fan on all the time could be the A/C is on or the system is running hot. The fan should kick on when the cars A/C is on. Otherwise the fan kicks on when its hot outside and after the car shuts off on a hot day,

If the pump continues to run and its not the fan the pump is faulty. Some of the No Name pumps off ebay and amazon have this problem due to poor build quality when replaced. On an Genuine MINI or ZF/bosch (OEM Maker) that's older it can be that build up. Their was a recall for the older design which my MINI was updated with the newer design. Run your vin here: https://www.miniusa.com/owners/tools...rt/recall.html

If its been done (no recall) then you will need a new pump. Watch as the Fan can also get jammed from rust and plastic bags. Make sure the fan spins freely.

Relay can be an issue, rare but happens and it can stick.

Just an update, found the part number (lower price) power steering fan/grille/mount kit, usually once these sell out or the warranty has been completed the will no longer have the lower cost one and it will just be normal cost part. Its been a while so most people might not be covered now. Saves you over $100.00
