Oil filter socket size

I have been trying to change the oil filter in my 2003 R50. I don't know who pull the cap on last but I can't get the darn thing loose. What is the size of the nut on top of the filter housing?
Thanks!!

Thank you so much kind sir!!
I think I have that size wrench in my tool box at work but I am buying a low profile socket. Someone really tightened this thing down.

They tend to do that naturally.
Quite often you may need a breaker bar or extension on your ratchet, to get the initial loosening done.

In my limited experience, the cap is stiff even once loosened. Always makes me a little nervous.

I've been changing the oil on these cars since 2006 (once the warranty on my 03 ran out) the best tools I've found are a 3/8 inch drive shallow 36mm socket and a long handle ratchet. Like this one. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-36-T...atchet/3381184 Sometimes I'll switch to a short ratchet once it's loose, but usually I just take it off with the long ratchet.

Of course it helps if some one didn't crank it super tight when they installed it, and making sure that you lube the o-ring before you install it is important too.

I bought this after struggling the first time. This shallow socket makes it much more manageable.

Be careful when putting the housing back on not to cross thread it.

Thanks guys!
I ordered a 6 point socket and I have a flex head ratchet in my tool box at work. It was Friday of a 3 day weekend and changing the oil filter was not on my mind.
