Power steering pump

Doing an oil change on my R53 and noticed my power steering pump coated with fluid. What might this be telling me, bad hose, leaky reservoir? The pump and fan are under recall right?

This seems to be common for our cars

replace hoses, clamps, res. and go go

check with dealer, but i think this recall expired

I was kinda wondering if the Recall had a time limit cause i don't remember seeing it on the notices.

my dealer told me it was 10 years iirc. Ironically I just missed mine by a month or so, something like that it was some time back now.

maybe call a few dealers, cross check them.

This is the reason why I changed to Canton PS alum. tank. No leaks so for!

Could also be general oil leaks from the engine, as this seeping oil will be blown onto the parts which lie after the engine (by just driving the car). I had the same issue and replaced:
-Oil filter housing gasket
-Oil cooler gaskets
-Oil pan gasket
-Rocker cover gasket

Definitely contact other dealerships, I just had the power steering pump recall performed Friday on my newly acquired R53 that never had it addressed.

New power steering pump, new power steering pump fan, new fluid as well as an assortment of odd ball things. (clamps, o-rings, and hoses?) I'd have to pull my paperwork out to confirm exact pieces but the main hitters were those. They also inspected the wiring and confirmed that was in good shape so nothing needed there.

I would agree to this but the oil leak is LOCALIZED to the pump.

Yeah, seeing what others had to shell out to get their replaced I'm pretty thrilled with them honoring the recall and completing it on a 16 year old car.

Might be worth a long trip if your recall hasn't be preformed?

How was your steering before you took it in and prompted you to do so?

Pump was groaning and whining when turning at low speeds (in and out of garage etc.) and very heavy steering at lower speeds. Every now and then the power steering pump fan would make an awful noise too. I just picked this R53 up two months ago so I've been going over things and knew when I purchased it that those would likely need replaced. I checked the VIN against the safety recall and found out the recall had not been preformed on the car though so I reached out to the MINI dealership for confirmation and they instantly ordered the parts to have it done.

Unrelated, I was also having a clunk/click sound when turning the steering wheel, but after using some dry lubricant on the bearing on the steering column that's since been addressed.

I think it maybe time to call my closest dealer and find out about mine, but based on your dealings I’d say the recall hasn’t expired.

You can check whether your car had the recall preformed on the nhtsa.gov website. If it hasn’t been done you should be good to go. That’s how I found out mine wasn’t done, just confirmed it with the dealership.

This nhtsa.gov recall check might not work any longer. I entered my '05 MCS VIN and got no information back.

From the nhtsa.gov vin number recall check page:

What this VIN search tool will not show:

  • A vehicle with a repaired safety recall. If your vehicle has no unrepaired recalls, you will see the message: "0 Unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN"
  • Safety recalls that are more than 15 years old (except where a manufacturer offers more coverage)

Recall still in effect for my 02 R53, one of the first, if not the first, ordered in the US way back then.

So i thought id share the outcome on my Power steering. Called dealer to find out about the recall and made an appointment so they could inspect it. They did confirm that they would take care of all components related when i made the appt. They ended up replacing the pump, fan, hose clamp, self locking collar, hex nut flange, O-ring, gasket ring, rubber mounting, torx screw and new fluid. They wouldn't replace any hoses that were leaking as i hoped they would. But get this, they wanted $298 to replace the feed hose that was leaking and after i almost laughing out loud i politely declined. I mean, if it would of been reasonable i might have said sure why not. But come on man. Anyways they also did an inspection beforehand and made a video of it and sent it to me via text as i was milling around the dealership. The result was all the trouble spots associated with Mini's.... A couple of leaks, valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. Also but more concerning is my control arm bushings are shot. Estimate for both Gaskets and the bushings and labor..... $3086, yikes!

like I said if you didn't read , it's in effect. I literally just had it done...geez people and their spread of misinformation..no offense but I get offense from that... like people always claiming the stock ic out performing the oversized ones lolololol I got hard numbers on that too saying otherwise.

I’m pretty sure the recall only runs through early MY2005 cars. February 2005 or something like that?

I’m no expert on this, just had mine done on my 03 so obviously the recall is still in effect.

When I had mine done a few years ago, I believe the dealer shop said the recalls never expire.

Yep most should be covered, but most of the time its those lines that leak down on the pump. If the pump did not fail and leak. Those are not replaced unless the pump is replaced under the warranty extension. When i took mine in they saw i had the newest pump already and the lines would not be covered if they leaked.

Its up to the dealer from what i found on the pump and lines when they look at it.
