Toggle switches

Anyone know what are the options that use toggles. I know that the windows use toggles, but I'm not sure what else. I would love to have a full bank of them and avoid gaps.

ASC/DSC, front and rear foglights. All MINIs have at least three toggles, for the windows and the door locks.

My switches are: Window DSC Lock/Unlock Front Fog Lights (blank) Window

The blank one is used for rear fog lights in states where that is legal.

I hear that you can get a garage door opener circuit to use with one of the empty toggles.

How about toggles to release black smoke, oil slicks and fire missles? The machine gun trigger should be on the blank button on the MFSW!

When you say 'fog lights' you mean the ones mounted on grill at dealer or aftermarket, right? Not the ones low on the front bumper which are standard. I plan on adding the rear fog light and eventually a bank of 4 driving lights on the grill. I figure that should round out the toggle bank.

Anyone have an opinion on grill mounted driving lights. I wanted a chrome set, like the ones from Mini-madness. Should I go bar mounted or individually mounted?

FOG lights are the factory provided ones mounted low in the bumper, below the turn signals. These get the switch in the bank with the rest.

REAR FOGS are a dealer installed option after the vehicle is delivered. These use the usually blank space. The toggle bank gets replaced when the rear fogs are added.

DRIVING lights are mounted at headlight level in front of the grille, the factory kit for this uses individual brackets. The switch for the driving lights is mounted in the knee bolster or pacel shelf to the left of the steering wheel. Most aftermarket kits/installs go in similarly, using either brackets to mount them or a light bar.

So how many blank spaces are there on a stock car without rear fog?

Sticky,
Here is a pic of a full panel (click for bigger image):

The most basic panel (MC only) has only three switches - two windows & the door lock/unlock.
The MCS always has the second position - either ASC (standard) or DSC (upgrade).
And you can fill the front and/or rear fog positions if you get the option.

NOTE: You can buy a fully populated switch panel even if you don't have the options - the extra switches won't do anything except look good. My GBMINI had the rear fog switch (toggle switch panel bought from England) at least six months before rear fogs were allowed in USA ...

Have you looked at the Alta mounting bar?

It fits below the bumper line and actually (I believe) mounts to the bumper mount. In other words, it's very sturdy. It's not going to wobble or vibrate. You can mount 2 driving lights and 2 fogs, or 4 driving lights, or whatever.

Thanks. so it looks like all I need would be the rear light to fill out the bank. Nice.

Yeah, I looked at it. Is that the one that mounts down low on the bumper? If so, it wouldn't work for me because I want 4 lights and the license plate hangs down to low. Unfortunately in NYS your required to have a front plate. Otherwise it would be a great option. I saw a bar that allows for mounting on the grill, but I can't remember where.

I was thinking about adding neons and a Knightrider style LED, ordering a full switchpanel, and using the extra toggle to control the additional lights. Of course, I'm a bit iffy about the neons though... any thoughts?

I saw an MCS with a flashing blue LED mounted in one of the blank toggle positions...I assumed it was for an alarm. Interesting use of a blank spot.

I think it'd be great to have a look-alike toggle bank (someday?) that wasn't tied into the car's electronics at all so you could wire in whatever switches/LEDs you wanted. Think of it...two toggle banks!!!

Dude....that is phenomenal! Where would you find a knightrider LED, and where would you put it?

I was hoping to mount it in the hood scoop, have to be careful not to block the airflow. Just have to find an LED strip that would work in such an application, I was hoping to be able to find one online... I've looked but not seriously, have to wait until I have some funding to spare to actually look.

Yeah, I though the scoop would be the obvious place, but I would be real nervous about blocking or diminishing airflow. I've heard stories about blockage of airflow and engine overheating with a line of four rally lights on the grill, but I'm fairly sure thats bulls#@t.

Looks to small, and don't think it would fit.

Grrr... I've found blue and red, but not any green... My MINI is BRG and I would plan on green neons and LEDs... grr... for any interested parties:

LEDs here

EDIT: Found green and much higher quality LEDs. Anybody who knows something about this want to look at these and tell me what you think?

They look very cool (wouldn't put ext. neons or ground effects myself but...). The knightrider thing would be the sh#t. If you do the job, be sure to post an mpeg.

Two things to remember:

1. The toggle switches are not really toggle switches. They are fake toggle switches that really just press on keyboard type switches on a circuit board mounted behind the switch panel, and that sends data to the computer which actually turns things on and off. They are not like real toggle switches where you can hook a 12 volt line to the back and turn it on and off using the switch.

2. If you want to mount 4 lights in the front of your mini, consider making a simple "badge bar." Mount two heavy duty driving light brackets, and then cut a piece of aluminum bar with two slits on the ends that connect the bar between the two brackets, and have holes in the bar where the brackets have them. When you bolt the two lights to the brackets, it affixes the bar, and then you have the bar section to add two more lights in the middle.

Hi Sticky Wicket.

I too, live in NYS, and I've attached the Alta light bar, with only 2 of the 4 lights. Check out my thread to see the results. I've found that the 2 IPF driving/fog light combo lights are wickedly bright. I don't feel I needed another 2 lights...

Just a heads up ... since sometime last year, MINI will no longer mount four official rally lights; there is a bulletin announcing that warranty will be refused (presumably on overheating related issues) if four lights are fitted to cars done since that date.
So I certainly think you would have issues with four aftermarket lights - especially most are bigger than official lights ... you must hope that the lights do not affect air flow and cooling because there is an official position that they do and that warranty is refused.

If you add rear fogs at the dealer, they give you a new toggle switch control that has the new switch for REAR fog lights. PRetty sweet, had I known I would have ordered from factory. (Mine has a toggle missing - maybe I put Machine Gun button there)

I'll check with my dealer. they would be the ones doing the work anyway.
