R52 JCW died while cruising on the freeway...help!

Hi Everyone!

I'm reaching out for some assistance. My 2008 R52 John Cooper Works (supercharged 6Spd) died on the freeway. It cut off all at once. Small backfire and cut out. Done. Pushed in the clutch and rolled to the side of the road.

It turns over, but won't start. I had to get it towed home. I think it's not getting fuel or spark? I checked some of the fuses. They seem good. I think there are more fuses (large ones) underneath.

I have the following codes...
p1613
p1607
p1515
p1616

With a few pending that are...
p1515
p1617
p0500 ( that's been on for some time)

I love the car. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, however trouble shooting is not my expertise. 45K miles on the clock.

Any help from the community is appreciated and welcome.

Thank you!

Yes I did. I also swapped the relay.

I think there are "main" fuses under the fuse block too?

Have you checked the coil and/or the plug at the back of it?

I remember seeing posts in the past on broken wires in the harness close to the connector at the back of the pack due to clearance issues.

What are the other symptoms? Still power to lights/gauges/climate/locks? Any other weird issues past couple of months? How long have you had these codes?

1613 Serial comm link with ASC
1607 CAN version (not sure what this means)
1616 none mini-specific listed in my manual
1515 none mini-specific listed my manual
P0500 vehicle speed sensor

Did you check the big fuse under the fuse box?

I would look into the crank position sensor. That backfire you heard is indicative of a timing issue.

Thank you for the replies.

I can't seem to get to the lower half section of the to get to the big fuses. How do you get to them? Do you flip the fuse box upside down and slide off the cover? I don't have enough cable length to do that. Maybe I need to tare into it more to make room?

Also, the JCW exhaust "pops" a bit, so maybe it wasn't a backfire. However, I agree. Everything points toward crankshaft sensor (but no code for that). I don't like throwing parts at the problem.

All lights function fine. I do have an intermittent tach power failure. That can come on and off with a good bump. I've also had some dsc codes (5e43, 5e14, 5e18, 5e11,5e1e) that I thought were related to the tach power issue and maybe steering angle sensor. It was next on the list, then a new top.

Okay, this gets crazier. As I was checking fuses inside, my forearm was wet. I pulled back the carpet to find of water 1/4" in some areas. It's been parked for a few months since this happened. No mold, so I'm thinking it was recent. I'm guessing this came from the back window (a small segment has separated from the convertible top. I have it covered. Not sure if it's the cause of the problem. I start thinking fuses (the big ones) again.

This car is really awesome. I take excellent care of her. The water thing makes me crazy!

Back the beginning....is there an easy way to get to the large fuses underneath the bank in the engine?

Thanks!

Basically just slide it off. There are a couple of tabs so you might have to push harder than normal.
