05 cooper S died while driving. Wont crank help

I havnt had any issues with this car untill now. I was driving along and the car just died. No warning, just died. Rpms went to zero..
..I did this yesterday, but started up again after a few minutes.
...this time it only "burps" like it wants to crank, then immediately dies again..
I have a 1/4 tank of fuel. And again I've never had any problems from this car...
HELP.

Not sure how many miles, but given the car is 15 years old, has the fuel pump ever been changed? Can you hear it? (located under rear seat driver side)

Was there a check engine light on prior?

Just want to be clear: do you mean the engine turns over (starter turns the motor, cranking it over) and it acts like it wants to fire ("burps") or that it suddenly stops cranking altogether?

Also, have you checked battery voltage and pulled OBDII codes yet?

Replace the crank position sensor, what you are describing fits with a failing crank position sensor.

Symptoms
-Car cuts out random
-Car cannot be started
-Car is very hard to be started

A failing crank sensor usually does not give an CEL/error message. A failing sensor will give faulty symptoms to the ECU which cuts the fuel pump for safety (to prevent fire).

I have had this issue on 3 different cars from different manufacturers.

More info will help us help you

Any lights on your dash? Any codes stored? And more specific details of cranking or not cranking.

My buddy had his alternator die and power steering started failing then the engine. No start, no click, battery drained completely. Swapped battery out and he was able to drive to our cabin, just....as it drained the battery again. New alternator from Hendrix MINI. All good! Oh, this all happened at the Dragon 4 hours away! An MOTD to remember!
