I have a 2006 Mini Cooper base. It has about 161,500 miles on it with automatic transmission. When I drive it, I notice these lights come on, tire pressure, the triangle warning light, ABS and e-brake light. When this happens, my RPM and the speedometer begins to fluctuate and the car begins to jerk as well. Can anyone tell me why this is happening?? I attached a video here:
The evil triad, a sure sign of a battery on its last legs. Definitely check the battery AND main cable connections for looseness or corrosion.,
Dude if it were the battery, and this bad the car wouldnt start.
1) To me it appears its going into limp mode...when that happens it wont go over 30mph.
2) It could be an ground strap in the engine compartment or something more costly like a body control module(BCM).....the module controls everything from blinkers to door locks and windows.
3) Lastly, 160K miles on a CVT transmission is remarkable for a 1st Gen MINI.....it's also more electronic than it is mechanical...how did you do that ?!
Keep us posted.
FYI - MINI dealer knows more about these older MINI's than most independant shops....unless they have alot of clientel who drive them. That said, to cut to the chase and not waste time and money for this kind of diagnosis, the dealer is your best best. Preferrably one who has technicians on hand who have been there long enogh to have experience with the 1st Gen.
I'm betting its your Tachometer. No joke. Take it loose and unplug it.
Mine did the same things and I traced a million things to the CanBus communication in the wiring harness. I then replaced brain boxes and much of the wiring harness until that fateful day. A guy on this forum said he unplugged the tach and that fixed it.
Think of of the Tach as babbling without stopping and everything on the CanBus can't get a word in and so everything gets messed up.
At least it fixed mine. I got a replacement used tach and it still works.
A weak battery, not a dead one. That problem shows up even though everything else seems to work just fine. There is a lot of Gen 1 forum traffic on just that issue. I should'a called it the 'tri-fecta' exept it slipped m' mind. Here's a link that discusses it in one form pretty thoroughly.
One more thought, the crank pulley aka; engine damper pulley. Its a composition of metals and rubber to reduce harmonic vibration to the crank bearings in lower end of engine....as these begin to fail, since they are on the belt side of the engine it can produce rotational engine stumbling, and issues with anything else on the belt....A/C compressor, alternator. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_3089
