Spare Tire

Does anyone know of a temporary spare that would fit on the Mini? I've had three blown tires in the past year from road debry due to housing developments going up near my house. I may want to switch the car over from run flats to a 16" or 15" wheel for the winter, but don't want to be left stranded somewhere waiting for roadside assistance. I figure I could tote around a small temporary spare in the boot for peace of mind.

Why not just use the MINI spare that the Coopers come with or are you looking for a cheaper alternative?

i'm ASSuming that he has an S, thus no Spare, and no under-boot space for a spare...

I assumed the same. He was asking about a spare that would "fit" the MINI, that's why I recommended the one out of the Cooper. There will be no fittment issues with that one, and it's small enough that it will fit nicely in the boot, of course wrapped up in the wheelbag from the bag lady, JerseyGirl

My solution for my MCS:

spare from a A3 Jetta(or Golf) '95-'99 (about $20)
jack from a honda ($5)
cheapo breaker bar and 17mm deep socket (or whatever size ur lugs)

The centerbore for the Jetta spare is a larger than the MCS, but for temp use is probably fine. A late '90s Civic I heard has a spare that has the correct bolt pattern and correct centerbore (should be a bunch of those around).

fyi: from the dealerships, a new spare for the Cooper is over $200, unmounted, at least from my inquiries.

completing my cheapo method, the spare (when carried) is inside an old extra large sweatshirt, sleeves tied up

I do have the MCSC on order (expect the middle of Feb., God willing). Thanks for the info all. I'll look into it.

I got a spare MC tire and a bag from Jersey Girl. It fits snugly on the floor behind the passenger seat. This is very convenient since I rarely use the back seat and it leaves the boot completely free for whatever.

Sounds like a do-able plan. I think I like that option to save on boot space. Are the bags still available? The picture on her thread didn't come up

A Miata's space-saver-spare fits a MINI. They both have a 4x100 bolt pattern. You can get one fairly cheap on eBay. Also here is a list of cars that also have a 4x100 bolt pattern that may yeild a spare for ya:

Even with the run flats on my MCS I carry a spare tire on long trips.

Does the MC spare tire fit on the MCS?

I called the Parts Dept at my dealer to order the MC spare tire rim, to use on my MCS. The manager expressed a concern that this wheel, being 15", will not clear the brake calipers on the MCS. Has anyone actually used one of these on the MCS without rubbing, or at least done a test-fit to make sure there was clearance?

Not sure about the 15" spare wheel from MINI, but the 15" steel wheel snow tire package from tirerack fit my MCS fine.

Same here. I've got 15" "holies" on my MCS for winter and have no problems.

Be careful buying an ebay or other used compact spare. The bolt pattern may be correct 4x100, but it may not clear the brakes (I speak from experience)

I have 4 S-Lites with bald tires on them and will sell all of them separately for people who want spares to carry on road trips or whatever. $75 each and shipping.

I have one more that I keep for just that reason.

Just PM.

This same topic came up at our club meeting. What if you flip the space saver around and bolt it on to clear the brakes? If it is just to be used in an emergency and you don't corner really hard, should work. If I get some time this week I might give this a try.

Back in the day, the VW Bugs coverted to Baja kits used to flip the stock front wheels around to give it a wider stance.
