Temp sensor replacement

Replacing temp sensor in r53 and it suddenly got real tight. Like cross threading. I got the first 4 threads in fine so I know it’s not that, but it doesn’t seem like it wants to go in any further. Should it go all the way in? How tight should it be?

also someone was in here before and ripped the pigtail off, so they just twisted the wires together and left it. Going to be fixing it right while I’m in here.

the problem was whenever I started the car the temp gauge would go right to max even when cold. When I turned it off the fans would keep going for a while.

Is it a pipe thread? I would guess it would take 10-15 ft lb of torque...I have a manual, but it completely ignores removing/replacing the coolant temp sensor - it says it exists, but no instructions on it.

The oil pressure sensor takes 15 ft lb. If yours went in four threads, that sounds feasible for a pipe thread. It probably needs another full turn with a socket wrench.

i didn’t notice a taper, on the new or old one. But it definitely felt like that. Googling for days and I wasn’t able to find anything on anyone ever replacing it. Always the thermostat housing, never the sensor.

Thanks for that.

I think i over-torqued it. The question is do i back it out and reinsert it? or leave it go?

My ocd would take over and I’d have to pull it out and torque to spec...not sayin that’s the right thing to do. I don’t think that helps you, sorry 😐

I took it out, and put it in right. But then another issue came up. The pigtail is wrong. I ordered the right one off pelicanparts as per this thread:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...connector.html

However it came with no wires/plugs. I extracted them from the old harness, but they did not fit in the new one. Any suggestions?
