P1613 solution
P1613 solution
I think I've found a fix to the P1613 error code. It comes from protecting two wiring harnesses from a sharp steel flange. I used a sharp edge protector like people used years ago to stop doors from dinging other cars.
Several people described the P1613 error code but few described a fix. One person mentioned paying $1500 for a fix where a new steering angle encoder installed and said it was actually a shorted wire going to the sensor. Another person described tearing out all the wires looking for the problem. And yet another person said it was the GIU transmission control unit to the CVT.
My daughters car tripped this code and I followed the wiring harness looking for the problem. Since both the steering wheel angle sensor and GIU are next to the steering wheel shaft, I looked under the dash at the steering column.
What I found were two wiring harnesses going through the engine fire wall and near the steering column. These then go by a U-shaped sheet metal brace around the steering column. The harnesses then rubbed against the edge of the sheet metal edge in such a way that the sheet metal cuts through the wire insulation.
In my garage, I found some edge protector stuff used to stop car door dings, cut three inches off and put it on the sharp edges. I then cleared the codes and guess what? The codes haven't returned.
Good luck,
Peter

Did not fix it.
Not only did the problem come back, but I found wires going to the BC1 unit (in the right side foot well) cut and spliced. I repaired them and the problem went away.
For Two weeks. But now it has returned again.
Frustrated.

1. Tachometer stopped
2. Lights on dash lit up like a Christmas tree
3. Transmission started shifting wildly (1st gear at fifty, etc.).
Drove it home and left it for now.

Problem is getting worse. Now I've cleaned most grounds and battery terminals and replaced the wheel speed sensors. Today I removed the tachometer and it seems better but I need to see if it is better long term.
And of course, I don't have a tach or SES light to turn on.

This is an old post, but for anyone who should stumble on it, I had the same issues described by ptkacik. 3 light trifecta, EP mode, many communication error codes P0700, P1611, P1613 and a tachometer that would intermittently shut off, then come back on. I disconnected the tach and all problems went away. I'm waiting on a junkyard tach to see if when reinstalled all problems stay away.
