Sunroof/after market roof rack question...

Hi Everyone!

Does anyone know if there are good aftermarket roof racks that can go on the sunroof? I need to bring my snowboard and mtn bike around. That and the fact that i wanted an all white MCS (with red and black interior, chrome inside and outside) and wasn't sure how great the sunroof would look against the pepper white. Thanks!

Any of the aftermarket roof racks will work with the sun roof if installed properly, and no items lashed to it extend below the rails. I have mentioned before the problem of black roof racks on white roofed cars - looks tacky. I painted my Yakima Q-towers white and they look a lot better on the white roof. They dissasemble and you just need to paint the plastic parts.

So does the Yakima.

As with the Thule, the catch is that the trays have to be pushed out to the sides as far as possible so they don't interfere with the sunroof.

I recommend the MontBlanc rack, which does not pull on your plastic rails like the other two. Not only does it work with the sunroof, you can open your sunroof with it on.

I'm curious, how does it attach then? Can you please post some pics? Would really like to see this.

It wraps around and underneath, where the window goes up, basically the metal on the edge of the roof.

Funny, I just got a Mini parts catalog in the mail and it had a picture of that rack and I thought of this thread. I have the Yakima rack and it mounts the same way (except for that extra foot that rests on the roof).

From what I have seen, the Yakima grabs onto the the plastic rain gutter, where the montblanc goes around and under it and is really grabbing onto the metal on the inside. The MB cannot be mounted further back than the door window as it goes in beyond the rubber seal, where as the yakima grabs further back because it is only grabbing the gutter.

gotcha ... I've never seen the MB up close so I couldn't tell that it grabbed onto the metal behind the gutter
