What is this knocking/rattling?

Sounds like its coming from the engine/supercharger. It used to be much louder when my oil was low, it quieted down since adding a quart.

Or search "knocking/rattle r53 mini" in posted today

Sounds like possibly timing chain tensioner.

Is there any way I can fix it myself? I have tools but I can't really afford a mechanic at the moment

Yes it’s not that bad. But I’d wait for another opinion before jumping in. Someone here will chime in.

+1 on the tensioner replacement. That's certainly the least expensive repair associated with this type of sound. Access is a bit tight but look up ModMini on YouTube and you'll find a repair video. If that doesn't fix it, then your next step would be timing chain guides and/or chain.

+1 on the timing chain tensioner as a possible culprit. When mine started to go, it would only rattle when starting warm (i.e. when I would drive, park for a while, and then restart). Replacement is fairly easy and the part is cheap.

Now that said.....something else to check.....does the rattle go away when you press the clutch pedal in? It sounds a lot like a rattling clutch also. Hard to diagnose sounds in general, but especially via video.

good luck.

I know for sure it's not the clutch. The sound continues even when I press the clutch in
