Can anyone help or provide info for a folding/flip key conversion for a R53 three button key. I have researched online but have come up with practically nothing. There are conversion for the two button key but not the three button. There are humors a BMW LX8FZV key could work by either using your existing key's internals or being able to program a LX8FZV key to work with a Mini.
You are about to delve into a crazy, convoluted world of wizardry regarding keys and the associated programming. Do a search using the terms, North American motoring keys, and you will find several threads regarding this issue. Valvashon, has a business on this forum repairing keys and may respond to this. Good luck!
It's going to be a very difficult road ahead.
The R53 transponder chip is fused into plastic innards.
To transfer the internal parts, you'll have to butcher the entire key (both to remove the key and transponder).
My advice, buy a couple cheap used R53 keys on eBay and experiment how to cleanly dissect the key.
H_C, Cracking the R53 fob open was fairly easy. The enclosure is fused together but the chip is just sitting inside. The 2 buttons conversions you move the original chip to the new flip key fob with a blank key, then get a professional to cut a new key. There is a YouTube video that shows you how to crack the fob open with a razor blade.
Yes, I agree, opening the key fob is easy.
However, the key itself is bonded to the plastic housing. Also in the housing is the transponder chip.
If you want the transponder, you'll have to dremel it out.
