Flip key

Is it possible to convert my current key into the flip style key version? Would it be as easy as just getting the shell and moving all the parts into the new shell?

A few folks did this with VW flipkeys back with the gen1 mini's years ago...both were made by valeo, so the shafts fit fine (most got the matching VW shaft cut). Not sure about others...but ALL the parts must be moved, including the RFID was chip, about the size of a grain of rice(on the gen1 cars)...
Only real issue I see, it the flip keys (IMO) work best with a pushbutton start, where the shaft is flipped up for emergency use.
If you do destroy your key, replacements are about $180, so watch out!!

Absolutely. You can get an uncut flip key on eBay for under 10 bucks. But you will need to find a locksmith that can cut it for you before you transfer the electronics. Here is a thread with everything you'll need to do the job.

But you might also find that paying Dr. Bruce to do it for you may be the cheapest and painless way to go.
