A/C Whine?

My MCS '05 Cabrio with the Auto-A/C option (part of the luxury package) seems to have developed a whine as of yesterday. Has anyone else experienced it? The car only has 2100 miles on it, no other problems until this. When I turn off the A/C the whine tapers off after a minute or so. Getting ready to go on a road trip so I would like to wait until afterwards to take it in to have it looked at.....

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving, all.........

Is it inside the cockpit or out?

Mine makes a lot of noise (whine) under the bonnet, especially when accelerating. From what I understand it is the compressor and it is normal.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong...

Thanks for the response. It can be heard inside, not super loud but enough to notice something's there. It's almost like when you have an amp that picks up engine noise. When we lifted the bonnet it was definitely noticable as well, seemed to be a bit on the back left, underneath. I need to look at the ol' manual to see what that could be. It's not happening every single time though, which is what confuses me!

Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!

I experienced this a couple of times but it has gone away (it's been several months since I last heard it). Mine, too, seemed to be related to the A/C. My noise seemed to be coming from near the defrost on top of the dash, if I remember correctly. Not sure what it was, though. I don't use the A/C that often, especially at this time of year.

My '05 too had this about two weeks ago; scared the crap out of me as we were about 60 miles from home. I finally realized that turning OFF the A/C stopped the whine... This is the first "unnatural" sound the MINI's made. I just rolled past 53000 miles this week. Figures, I had the 50,000 mile extended warranty too. Oh well. The good thing is I haven't heard it since then... Hmmm.
As with virtually everything age and miles brings problems. Still LOVE MY MINI.

My '06's AC whines a bit, especially when it's really hot outside. Heck it almost sounds like an S/C. But it keeps pumping cold air inside the cabin so I'm not really concerned. FWIW, my 06 only has 7000 miles and it's made this noise since day one.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago - whining noise under acceration, went away when I turned off the A/C. Took it to the shop, they diagnosed low refrigerant, and replaced the A/C pump (under warranty - I have an '03 MCS, 35K miles). Since the refrigerant has the lubricant for the pump in it, low refrigerant can mean the death of your pump if you let it go too long.

My baby had a whine I heard that was only when I was going 60mph or higher. I thought it was from the Sunroof or the front glass at first.

However, I finally realized that it was from the AC. Specifically the flap that closes off outside air when you press the recirculation button. I noticed the if I turnd off the recirculate button the sound went away.

Apparently the area where the recirc flap seals can get dirt and debris on it and instead of closing flush it stays slightly open. The air being forced in makes it into a big 'ol whistle.

Cleaning the flap may work, or having it replaced may be the only solution.

I have a 04 MCS, 51343 miles. My a/c compressor has been whining for over two years now and the cabin is still nice and cold. I have been told by dealer and heard from other MINI owners that this normal under HIGH ambient temps. these compressors are a dual-stage set up that go into a high output mode under high loads which results in a whining noise. My is quiet when temps are under 75 deg or so. Hope this helps.

Happy Motoring, Jeff
