Rear Brakes Locking up

Tap the brake on the R50 and the RR brake will lock up, especially in the snow. Very dangerous car at this point. LR also dragging a bit as well. Ordered 2 new Calipers, Rotors and brakes. I guess this is a pretty common issue with these cars?

Not sure how a bad caliper can make it lock up early. Seems like a bad proportioning valve? Or possibly poor tires.

Could be pistons seizing.

I am pretty sure it is the piston. It will release after 15-30 Seconds most times.

Minidogger- What do you mean by "locking up early" ?? You tap the brake and it locks.....I went last night and swapped cars with my son at work so he could safely get home. I drove all the way home never touching the brake. When I got to my drive, I hit the brake....And it stuck.....

It’s most likely the piston. Proportioning valves rarely have issues. I would pull the caliper and see if you can manually turn the piston. You will need a brake piston tool. Can rent at auto parts store. You might be able to free it up or it might be cocked. Look for leaking brake fluid around the piston seal. You can also try pulling the boot away and spraying some rust buster of your favorite flavor around the piston. Just don’t tear the boot.

Thank you. I have one of the tools, I think...My MR2 rear pistons need screwed in as well..Should be the same?? Probably not with BMW..lol. I am not even going to mess with it...The car spent the majority of it's 80K plus miles in Canada.....So....they are going to need replaced and that may free up for a little while...., but go right back to sticking. It is my son's car.....So I really need him to be safe out there....and the car is dangerous in the snow...even with 4 snow tires.....if there are dry conditions....the wheel will turn......but, hangs up every x brake it tapped.

Sounds like it needs some serious front end work especially if it’s been in the far north for a while.

I’m surprised you didn’t smell the hot brake.
