Hey all,

Anyone know which insurance company has the best rates for the Cooper S? We're with Progressive now, and they don't even have MINI listed as a make in their drop down lists. When I played around with adding one our policy to try and get and idea of rates, I had to enter it as "other" and declare a base value. That seemed to spike the rate.

I'll tell you what my State Farm agent told me. Basically, the insurance actuaries (sp?) don't have enough data yet to decide an appropriate rate, this being the new Minis' first year out. Therefore, he quoted me the same rate I am paying now for my current auto. Subsequent payments will change once the actuaries have enough research to go on. This is a bit risky if you are hoping to avoid big payments in the future and not have to shop around again.

Make sense? If not, IM or email me.

One more thing: I use to have an Alfa Romeo Graduate. All I can say is little cars typically mean HIGH rates. That was back before SUVs ruled the road (FYI: I went to the 2002 Chicago Auto Show and it was more than 50% trucks and SUVS!). It sounds like you may be married, Ripsaw, so that may help keep your rates lower. Make sure to remind your agent about the Mini's anti-theft system and if you have the steering wheel with radio controls. Also, the latest crash ratings on the Mini were stupendous, so hopefully the actuaries will keep that in mind when using their calculators.

Can't tell you who has the best rate for your driving record/age/home ownership status, etc, all these are variables that fluctuate from company to company. I can tell you that my MCS is slightly cheaper for me than a 96 Passat VR6 or a 02 Jetta TDI (diesel).

Getting a Progressive quote in NYC hovered somewhere between difficult and impossible (I'm still not clear if they underwrite in the state). I was advised by the dealer that Gieco was the best rate, and I got quotes from Geico and Kemper. Geico was 2/3 the Kemper quote (I am a renter, in NYC) in a pretty much apples to apples comparison. State Farm no longer underwrites here. BTW, for a clean driving record, 33 yr old male, with LoJack and no commuting, my rate was $2100/yr.

Dear God is right! For my MCS and my wife's car we pay 1296 with MET Life. My insurance actually only went up about 12 bucks a year. Going from a 99 Miata to the MCS.

Well, all I will say is that the insurance is cheaper than the garage. I live in the land of $105 street sweeper tickets.

I can't remember, does the MINI have some kind of anti-theft system if you don't buy the car alarm system? I seem to remember the dealer saying something about that, but I don't have my owners manual in front of me.

married w/ child, age 39, homeowners, good credit rating, no wipeouts last 6 yrs. Hopefully this helps rates, but with the economy in the commode and insurance firms losing money on their investments, and all the lawsuits against insurance firms... plus the newness of the MINI, seems tough to expect a good rate.

I get my car next week and I'm dreading what my rates will become. When I add the MINI that will be three cars so they will have my 16 year old son as a primary driver on one.

Get this! I went from a 97 Escort with 95k miles to a brand new loaded "S".

My insurance? Went up only $58/year! I ONLY pay $943 for my S and I'm in NJ!

Not too many yrs ago when I was a few yrs younger (and single), I paid $4000/yr insurance for a Mustang GT convertible!!!!!!!!!

So $943 is unbelievable!!!!!

I have First Trenton and have been with them at least 5 or so yrs.

I pay about the same amount as greatgro....
I'm @ about $950/yr.
Here's the rub though...my 2001 pathfinder.... which I traded in to get my MCS cost me just shy of $900....
Makes no sence to me.

Peace,
D

28, Single, Homeowner, OR, only have 1 comp claim from 2 years ago, with Amica=1250/year

Beats the snot out of my 2001 Civic SI. Hooo boy! Now that was rediculous to insure. And given the fact that the first one I bought was stolen/stripped/totaled in under a month...well, no wonder insurance companies hate to insure them!!

Very pleased with Amica. Have them for home, too.

Married, over 40, homeowner, in a high rate area of Indiana.
My 2000 Saab 9-3 was $800/year. State Farm says my cost will go DOWN $14 per year for a MCS!...... Cool

Where you live makes a huge difference also.

Being in NW Fl and using USAA, I pay $680 a year. With a possible move to Ca in the works, I asked for a quote and was told $2000 a year.

I AM PAYING LESS THAN $471.00 A YEAR FOR MY MINI COOPER WITH PROGRESSIVE
INSURANCE COMPANY. I GET MULTI CAR DISCOUNTS, HOMEOWNER DISCOUNT, AND
OF COURSE HAVE NO YOUNG DRIVERS AND BEING MIDDLE AGE HELPS BIG TIME.
I CARRY HIGH LIABILITY LIMITS, LOW DEDUCTIBLES, AND GAP COVERAGE, TOW &
RENTAL. I AM RATED IN PROGRRESSIVE'S ULTRA PREFERRED PROGRAM. YOU HAVE
TO QUALIFY FOR THIS UNDER THEIR GUIDELINES. I AM AN AUTO INSURANCE AGENT
IN GEORGIA, HOWEVER, MY PREMIUMS ARE NOT LOWER BECAUSE OF THIS, ONLY THAT I KNOW HOW TO "BUY INSURANCE". "JOHN Q PUBLIC" CAN BUY THE SAME
RATES, BUT AGAIN, YOU HAVE TO QUALIFY. CALL YOUR LOCAL PROGRESSIVE AGENT
AND ASK "HOW CAN I QUALIFY FOR PROGRESSIVE'S "ULTRA PREFERRED RATES"?

Switching from a '96 Sebring Convertible, our insurance went from $1100 to $1250 a year. I thought this was a very reasonable change (We live in downtown Chicago).

I'm with Erie insurance and the premium on the MINI is $671. About the same as adding my 16 yr old son for 6 months.

Maybe I should get a quote from Progressive.

I'm with Erie as well. My MC is running me $617 annually. Just slightly more than what I was paying for my '93 Subaru!

I have frequently thought that I could probably save some money by shopping around. The only thing that keeps me from doing it is the excellent service I have gotten from Erie over the last 15 years. They know me by name and I actually know the people I'm talking to on the phone. In all the accidents and what-not that have occured over the years, I have nary a complaint about how Erie has handled the situations. I would hate to risk giving that up.

Also, I understand the point of a "quote," but don't forget that coverage can vary dramatically.

If your 16 yr old still resides in your household, you will not fair to well with Progressive, unless you exclude him from coverage, a risky & often fatal decision.

You got taken! Geico is in fact the best rate in NYC but I just signed up for $1200/yr with all coverages......
