I have a 2002 Mini and am having trouble changing the oil filter. The old filter(still in the car) has the spring and plastic cage that goes into the filter. The cage is removable.
The new filter that I was sold by Mini has a cage inside the filter. Attached are pictures of the new filter. I was able to get the old cage into the new filter but am not able to screw the cannister onto the housing. I susp Bottom of new filter Top of new filter
ect now that the "new" filter I have is also the wrong filter and not designed to work with the removable cage. But if I don't have the removable cage installed there is no plastic ring to go against the spring.
What do I do?
It looks like the right one to me... however... the spring loaded cage in that is connected to the oil filter housing cap shouldn't be removable... my 2004's isn't and my 2005 S isn't spring loaded both are firmly attached and NOT removable.
You should just press the filer onto the cage with the cap attached - the end with the black plastic gasket (your second picture) goes into the housing. The end in your first picture goes onto the cage - again which should be attached to the cap. Since it is spring loaded you need to press when you turn. Make sure that the O-ring is not crimped and set correctly in the grove (with the little hole) on the cap or you will have a big mess and a dead motor. Once you get the cap and the housing to start to thread, run your finger around the cap where the O-ring is and make sure it is set correctly before you finish tightening it down.
Torque to 18 lb/ft, which is not much force, slightly more than hand tight.
Thanks for the reply. The procedure you outlined is what I used. Perhaps I’m just not able to apply enough “pressure “ when trying to screw the canister back on as I’m an “old fart”.
what puzzles me though is the fact that when I put the old filter back on I have no problem getting it installed right.
It is a royal pain in the a$$ for two reasons. One, it does take some force to get it to start to thread. Two, there is precious little room to apply that force. I was shocked at how much a of a pain it was to change the filter.
Good call on the Fumoto. The stock drain plug has a tendency to "glue" itself the pan. I have the Fumoto's on both my 2004 and 2005. On a side note, I did see the other thread on this and did not know that the 2002's the cage and spring came out. I've owned my R50 Justa 2004 since new.

Actually, the cage only came out the FIRST time.Since then I have removed the old (and new filter) a number of times and the cage stays put. Not sure why.Perhaps I'm twisting it or something like that.
I've had a Fumoto on my Ram Cummins for a while.Seeing as how it holds 3 gallons of oil the fumoto lets me change oil without making a huge mess. When I removed the drain plug on the Cummins the first time I had to apply a LOT of pressure to get it loose. I suspected that it had been put on with an impact wrench.

Could you please show me a picture of the “groove (with the little hole)” you’re referring to?
Push that filter wide end up to that cap. Make sure the original cage is used. Its will take a couple times to get the hang of the threads, you do it ones and feel around the threads to make sure the cap is not cross threading and then you are fine.
