R50/53 Muffler strap knocking... Suggestions?
Muffler strap knocking... Suggestions?
I have a knocking in the exhaust when I go over small bumps that I have tracked down to the strap the goes around the muffler. The strap is actually knocking on the lip (seam) on the right side of the muffler. I tried tightening the strap but there is still enough play that it hits. Any suggestions on what I can wedge between the strap and the muffler to keep it from knocking? I can't think of anything that can withstand the heat and absorb the contact?
you don't want to wedge it as you'll transmit engine noise through the car, the exhaust needs to be free to move, find the cause of poor alignment or buy a genuine strap if this one is an aftermarket part causing it to foul?
The strap is the factory strap. It's the strap that encircles the whole muffler, I'm not talking about the rubber hanger. It's not banging against the body, the muffler and strap are moving just enough that the strap itself is tapping against the muffler. There is no chance of transmitting the sound to the body.
ok, perhaps the strap is rotting or something allowing the silencer to be loose despite it being tight? Or one of the items is aftermarket and not the original/compatible size? It happens and sometimes people don't notice, or care, either way something needs renewing rather than wedging stuff in there imo.
