R50/53 Another ECM/ECU question
Another ECM/ECU question
Car - 2005, S, JCW hatchback.
New engine and ECM/ECU. 2006, S.
Is the ECM/ECU dedicated to a particular car, or can multiple ECU/ECU's be interchanged in and out of one car ?
I just bought a second engine and will take it a little above the current engine (but still try to keep it California friendly !). It will most likely require different mapping than the current box has.
Can they just be swapped without any other work or any damage to something else ?

The ECU's are VIN specific......however, you can change engines from one car to another without problems.....the sensors on the engines don't care what car they are in
You have to use the ECU that came in the car....or you can send another ECU out to have it programmed to your vehicle

The ECU has the vehicle's VIN in it but it can be re-written. It also is sync'd to the immobilizer system.
If you're just changing the engine you don't need to change the ECU. You can remap the ECU with the FA software from Bytetronik or others to fit your needs.

Great, thanks downshift1
So this Bytetronik company will remap as required ? Any others that are trustworthy ?
A383Wing, just saying "send it out" doesn't really help a guy that's, "looking" for help, and has no current idea on where to go for this work.

Yes, Bytetronik offers a remote mapping service, it works like this:
Install the FA software on your ecu (all that's needed is a basic laptop)
Purchase the Custom Remote Mapping (CRM) service.
You provide data logs via the software you installed
They send you an adjusted map to load on your ecu.
You provide data logs via the software you installed
They send you an adjusted map to load on your ecu.
This gets repeated till your tune is complete.
