Early gas "door" swap

I tried the search function, unhelpful.
Question one - Does any one know, is it possible to put the early gas "door" on a later (2005) car ?
Question two - Does anyone know, is the early door still available ?

Do you mean a “regular” painted gas door when referring to an early gas door? In general the painted gas doors were on the non S R50 MINI’s and the exposed and recessed chrome “fuel cap” doors were on the S. The caps and associated trim assemblies are interchangeable between the two so you can get the look you prefer, except on the convertibles. Convertibles can only have the painted doors as the recessed trim required for the chrome gas cap door interferes with the folding top assembly.

ECS Tuning -

Thanks for the search, but I want to go the other way.
I'd like to smooth things up a bit by removing the chrome cap (on S cars) and put the "cheaper" (?) door in place of the chrome cap.

Is this what I want (from your site) ? -
Hinge - 51177033498
Door - 51177061286

Like it, I'm actually working on the same thing now. Only, possibly making an adapter to put the "flush" cover onto the "S" hinge assembly.

Ok, That looks like just it, I was looking at the old kit and the gas filler neck mounts into that lid cap section, then you just have the door. If you do the mod, post up. I have that set up on my R52 Cooper as it was stock. People back in the day always wanted the chrome cap look on there R52 Convertible and there was never a kit for that. The cap hinge cover comes primed and its like a quick turn and it snaps onto the door. Make sure its twist and tight.

Finally got all the parts. Painted the door, (too much clear on one edge !).
Started the swap last night, didn't get very far, could not get the inner liner out. Looked online, found instructions, got it completed this morning, takes a few minutes, but a very easy swap.
The paint color even matches nicely. I had it made up at a paint shop.
I like the simple/clean look.

Pics or it didn't happen.

It's always nice to see a gen 1 MINI pic after a mod is completed, even a gas cap swap.

Haven't taken pictures of my interior rear view mirror swap yet either. That would be more interesting.
A smaller, bond on (bonded onto the windshield) mirror, and a cut-up second mirror that's now the shape of a tear-drop to cover the big hole in the headliner. Much more viewing area out the windshield now.

I'll get some shots for posterity one of these days...

Yea, I "think" my original mirror has the small single PC board in it.
The mirror I cut up, did have the small single PC board in it.
I thought about pulling the board out of my original mirror...I didn't, I'm fine with using the key, as a key to unlock the doors.

I was curious as to why my 04 R53 MCS had a chrome gas cap cover and my 06 R52 MCS had the flat body painted fuel door.......and now I won't worry about putting a chrome gas cap cover on my convertible if it can't be done........Thanks ECS
