OProblem with a key for the 2002 Mini
I just bought a 2002 mini that came with 2 keys, One with the remote button and one without.
The remote key works but the plastic part of the button broke and fell out.You can still use the remote by pressing on the switch on the circuit board but I think its just a matter of time where this will quit due to dirt, etc. Can this key be repaired by replacing the plastic case.
The second key has no remote so I assume it is the "valet" key. What will it do.
Does it pay to shop around to Mini dealers for a new key or do they have a "cartel" to keep the prices high?
Thanks
Fred

The quick answer to both of you is yes, you can replace the casing of the fob keys.
Empty casings for both 2 & 3-button fobs are available on eBay for short money. It's a long time since I changed mine, so I don't have a record of vendors or prices - $10-$15 if I recall correctly.
It's a bit of a performance to swap the key blade, the circuit board & the little tiny 'chip' from one to the other, but perfectly do-able.
If you go anywhere near a MINI dealer prices start around $100 & go up & up & up.
The valet key operates the door lock & the ignition - there's nowhere else to put it!
