Rescued Another One

Went to see a 2002 mcs with a new engine but the seller stood me up. Was pissed and drove home, enroute I get an alert for a 2005 mcs with a clutch pedal on the floor. Smoker's car and not too well cared for. 161K miles but the body looked good. Some paint flaking around the passenger fog light. Had to jump the car to get it to start up, but could not drive it due to the clutch pedal issue. No codes on the OBDII reader. History from the owner is that it was fine, no clutch slippage but one day the clutch went to the floor as he was driving. Able to drive another 5-10 miles home parked it and now wants to sell. Guy tells me it is the clutch and will be expensive to fix about $2000. I tell him it is more like $3k at the dealer. It has about 5-6 very small door dings and some paint flaking around the passenger's fog lights, both drivings lights have cracks in the glass, and the antenna is broken. Headliner is falling down. Plugs and wires were changed 30K miles ago. Does have new tires, all-season Goodyears :(

We agree on a price and I tow dolly it home, what a miserable experience. Pull the battery to get it on a trickle charger. Looks like the battery has been for a swim.

Some of its issues are a failed passenger engine mount, coolant reservoir leaks, drivers seat torn, generally smelly, dirty smoker's car, both strut mounts failed, failed lower engine mount, and an oil leak on the passenger's side (possibly from OFHG) as the oil cooler looks pretty clean). Both inner cv boots have oil on them but I think it is oil spray from some where else.

Don't really like the hot air induction

Most likely the culprit of the clutch pedal on the floor

Old oil leak from the crank position o-ring. Seem pretty dry now, will leave it alone

Majority of the oil leak is superior to this area, which makes me believe the OFHG

Valve cover gasket is probably leaking

Also have this sound possibly coming from the PS pump. For sure not the serpentine belt which looks pretty new.

All in all not bad for what I paid.

Wow that's pretty rough. Glad you will bring it back to life. Looks like it had the water with the battery location.

Very nice find for the price. You say you received an alert. Is this from craigslist? I was doing this for Land Rover Discovery's for a while until there is not much profit in them now. Found plenty that always needed a head gasket. Thanks for this great story and I'm sure this Mini will come around.

Yes, I got it off craigslist. Not looking to profit on this car. I've got five kids and this is for another who will be 15 next year. I've got a 13 yo tom boy who wants to go into engineering and I want to get her a lifted truck. She is very petite so it would be fun to put her in a "monster truck."

Hi RUPNOK,
I think you have a good find there and I am glad you are saving it! I do the same thing and have saved about 14 of a variety of 2004 to 2010's.
I am a gen one guy and want to see them on the road for a very long time.
It looks like the clutch is a cheap repair!
2005 and 2006 models are my faves. Keep us posted on your work!
Thanks for taking up the torch!

ps. One important aspect of the battery, is it needs to be a high quality one. These cars are so dependent on a good stable battery. Also there is a clogged drain on the right side. It is a rubber plug with a small drain hole, that always clogs up!

The coolant plastic tank, has seen better days and should be replaced, as it will give up at some point and it is a pressure vessel, so the car will overheat and die, if it breaks. The can be had for $around $36.(or get you stuck in the wrong place!)

Glad you are saving this car!

You might check out the "bad air sponge" to help with the odor. Not sure it they are strong enough for a smoker's car, but they did help the "ethnic cooking" smells in our kitchen.

Thanks for the tip. I've purchased a charcoal air filter but have not installed it due to all the work I'm doing on the car. I'll probably end up shampooing the carpets as well. The smell is like kissing an ashtray.

My friend at the shop said put FRESH coffee.
grounds on several plates and leave them in the car for a week with the windows all the way up.

Sure.....it will smell like coffee...but its better than smoke !!!

And the coffee odor will soon be gone !!

Hey, y'all! I just saw a commercial for Turtle Wax. They have freshener spray and a bomb (like a bug bomb) that you can put in a car to clean up smells. Might do the trick to get rid of the "smoker's smell.

Once you're done with the drivetrain, I agree, shampoo the carpets. Makes a ton of difference.

My son used our Bissell Spot Clean carpet shampoo machine and pulled a ton of mysterious dark and unknown dirt out of the seats and carpets of his car.

I would also highly recommend pulling the seats and cleaning under there too. Lots of nasty surprises await!
