First of all, I am not an expert on the CVT...but I've read a lot of posts on this issue over the years.

I'm sure you got the car for a good price...therefore, it really boils down to if you're willing to take on a DIY repair. It's just too expensive to hire it out, unless you've got the spare ca$h coupled with a true love for the car.

If you do fix the car...changing the fluid at a regular interval is essential.

Other than the CVT, is the car in good condition? How many miles are on the car?

Good luck to you!

I also know the deadline for the CVT class action law suit was in early 2014.

I'm not an expert either but I do have a 2003 base mini with the CVT which was having a similar issue with the transmission. I am in no way trying to advertise anything just stating what worked for my Mini, proceed at your own risk. I bought an additive from oilextreme.com and once I changed the transmission oil and filter I added it in and the shutter/sluggish gear shift was corrected. My Mini has 150,000+ and is now running without a hiccup. As I stated this is what worked for me and if in turn it would have messed up anything I was willing to pay the consequences so I decided to take the gamble which in my case evidently payed off.

The one I bought was this one:
Oil Extreme Concentrate Additive (6 oz Single Bottle) $20.00

When you changed the oil did you run the gears the way you were suppose to? On this forum in the DIY section there was an article showing how to run through the gears after changing the oil which was extremely helpful.
Do your research there is a lot of knowledge on this site you just have to search for it. LOL. There is a method to the madness!

yyj3869, I only added the additive because I had the shifting issue so I mixed it in with the transmission oil. I don't think its necessary if your car is running fine and only needs an oil change. As I had stated in my reply its just something I tried and worked it's not something recommended from the dealer or set in stone.

Bring it to the Mini dealer.

They will/ should diagnose at no charge.

Where do you live ?

My local Mini dealer charges $125 to look at a car.

That's pretty amazing the additive fixed your cvt gold mini. From all the bad stuff you read about them you must have one of the highest mileage cvt out there.
