Is there a preference on where the gaps are located on the piston I found them set at 120 degrees

Can't find those specs in the repair manual. Off of memory from mine a few months back. Oil rings spaced at 120°, then the same with the last two. So yes. 120°

Cool. You ever deal with SPD piston rings? No written directions for install.

Here's another ? How critical is it to replace the main bearing bolts and rod bolts?

No I haven't used those, I went CP. As for rod bolts, I replaced them. It's not recommended to re use them.

Should I bother with replacing the main bearing bolts?

While they're not specified a "one time use" like the rod bolts, I would simply because of the amount of time, effort and cost, compared to buying new ones, if one did fail.
Again, another inexpensive way to simply be sure that you did everything you could to avoid problems down the road.
