Okay now this is too much

My Wife while stopped at a traffic light was amazed as a curious female in the car in front of her bails out to ask questions about the MC. That was tweaked but the light changes, the lady continues collecting information, as the other cars in line don’t pound on their horns.

Tolerant Society? Naaa a matrix event.

I have been amazed lately as I realize what it takes before some people will honk (or they never do)... Americans are afraid to honk as if it's a personal attack or something - it's meant to get your attention, nothing more! I'm tired of people not honking because they think it might offend someone - it's not the F-you button, it's the hey-watch-it button!

You know what I hate?

I hate when people ride your *** but you're not the one going slow its the guy or two guys in front of you and there is no potential to pass. I hate when there is a large amount of traffic at an intersection and 1) when it's your turn to go, the line of traffic is blocking your way to cross the intersection and you miss your light or 2) you're three cars back from the light and the light turns green but a huge line of cars going the other direction is running the red light which causes you to miss your light. These things make me angry And I'll beep! I swear I will! And in this instance it WILL be the FU button heh heh

Well, I woulda did more than honk in a situation like that, that's for sure. People whom are that blatantly ignorant deserve more than a honkin'.

Grrrrr! All of these stories are just examples of the obliviousness that seems to have spread like a weed throughout our culture. What selfish people, to think that they matter more than anyone else around them! That burns my hide! Grrrrrr! Wanda's, too! Well...her hide is metal! And I'm rather proud of my horn-honking technique! I ain't shy about it!

Friendly toots are great. Some people just need need a reminder that there is a world going on behind them ; give them two toots and a headlight flash. Blasts need to be reserved for the inattentive, oblivious and wreckless drivers endangering those around them.

I totally agree, buz! I employ the same techniques UNLESS someone has totally spaced out or is about to hit Wanda!

And just to make sure they really hear you, I'm thinking about this for my new MINI.

Honk Honk

I got those horns (or a version thereof) - see my gallery. I installed them & hooked them directly to the stock horn line (larger fuse required), so now if I just give the horn a slight push, the stock horns sound ever so slightly, but if I lay on it (WTF/FU mode), the stock horns blow AND the trumpets sound off.

I don't mind a little honking as can be witnessed by my license plate frame which reads:

MINI

Honk If Size Matters

Speaking of horns, how do you like the MINI horn? Is it loud enough to get "driving dead's" attention? What horn mods have you done?

Honk if you are guilty of post-abuse! TOOT TOOT! Tee hee!

I was stopped at a traffic light a few thousand miles ago.. with my windows down, enjoying the day and my music.. out of nowhere, I hear "Hey, how do you like it!?" .. looked around and expecting to see anything BUT a MINI.... in the left turn lane, it was a new MC and its owner.. I said "I love it, now get going your light is green!!"

A big pet peeve of mine is people who are solo at a left turn light facing the opposite direction from you, who get their light and sit there for a long time causing you to sit and wait as well. It happens to an extreme fairly often when I'm driving late at night and there's only a few of us on the road. I know most of the lights around here pretty well so I know when it's happening. People sure seem surprised when they get a honk from across the intersection in the middle of the night to move it because their light's green and they're asleep and/or otherwise occupied at the wheel.

I wish that were the case. It's amazing how much of a difference LA is from SD. I don't know ho many times I've been waiting for a green light and the instant it turns green, someone behind me is already honking. I almost expect it now. Sad.

Jonas, I'm in the SF area not LA. No surprise at the amount of difference between that and SD.

I hate over courteous drivers. I know, those of you in So Cal or Boston probably never heard of this, but I encounter the over courteous motorist fairly frequently out here in the boonies of SW Pennsylvania. We have drivers here who will be driving along normally and as soon as they see someone trying to enter the roadway, they will stop dead to wave them through.

It's actually pretty humorous when an over courteous driver encounters another over courteous driver at an intersection. One waves, "Go ahead." The other waves about the same time, "No, you go." The first one waves again, "I insist. Go." The whole process can sometimes take several minutes and on really hilarious occasions, both drivers pull out at the same time and crash into each other.

Charles,
Like a bad (smoking) addiction I have started to cut back and am lowering my posts per day which used to be higher than 12. But it is a slow process so please bear with me. Since I don't smoke or drink I guess I can work on my bad habits (buying MINI stuff and posting on NAM).
TOOT TOOT!

As for honking? In that case of interested parties- I'd pull to the side of the road and let the other drivers pass ASAP. Honking has alot to do with the social driving norms of the area you live in. In Boston, New York or Chicago, it's normal to honk even for little things. It can be for safety reasons or sometimes just to get things moving. It makes one feel like they have some control over congestion.

In Hawaii we "hardly" ever honk and it is considered rude to honk too much.
We do use our horns to signal others (like before they back into you) or to wake them up if they are sleeping at a stop light that changed color. I will usually go about 6 months without using my horn-maybe longer. Sometimes I hit it just to know that it is still working.

I just wish my MINI had a cute lil Euro "Meep Meep" sound, instead of the big American "Honk" sound. Would be so much more Brit.
I rarely use my horn unless someone is aimed at me and moving, especially people backing up in a parking lot.
In many parts of California, honking is an invitation to get shot at!

Friendly Beeping

Friendly beeping is defintily okay...Beeping in general is okay. If you're getting beeped at there are one of two reasons. 1) someone wants to say hi to you or 2) you're doing something wrong. Assess the situation, then wave back, honk back or correct your inappropriate behavior and wave an "I'm sorry". That's the way it should be. Dontcha think? And I also think that folks tend to get a little bent too easily. I mean, say I AM daydreaming at a light... honk at me.. my bad... I'll wave an I'm sorry and be on my way... but don't honk at me, roll down the window and yell obsceneities at me, etc. Everyone just needs to BREATE....

As a side note, I was in VA this last weekend and I was pulling into a parking lot and another woman had a mini who was going in the other direction and as we passed one another I waved and she waved back so enthusiasticly. It was totally cool! And then while driving down the strip at VA beach there was this guy that was going in the other direction and he rolled down his mini window and said "Hey nice car!" and I was like... "Yeah you too!"

Finally - did everyone get this little mini message kit with their cars? It has little cards in it that have differnet phrases? I've taken to leaving the "Hi Sexy" on my dash when leaving my car for extended periods... that one or "Put down the cell phone and enjoy the ride". Those are so cute!!!

xoxo Kimmie

When Im in my wife's Corolla or my beater Civic, I am embarrased by the horns... at least our MINI's horns sound nice and bold. Use it sparingly
but don't be shy to blare it once in a while at a dumb SUV driver making a
U turn where he's not suppose to.

What I really don't like are drivers who honk before they slow down or turn to avoid hitting someoneHonking is not an evasive action

That couldn't be farther from the truth in the DC area. Here the horn is definitely the "F-you button" and people use it all the time!

Actually, I get annoyed at how people OVER use their horn around here, especially taxi drivers. It gets to the point where a horn doesn't mean anything and people don't pay attention to them.
