R50/53 Spiking temp
After the new thermostat install, there's a likelihood that the system wasn't bled properly. Try bleeding it again. Also, make sure your fan is working properly at both low- and high-speed.
Also checked the fluid level in that new fancy milled aluminum overflow tank (which I hate that I cannot see into) and found that the level when cool was a scant 1/8th inch of liquid. I added a blend of pentosin antifreeze and water to bring it up to perhaps and inch of liquid. We'll see how that helps.
PM buzzsaw and he'll show you how to make a handy little dipstick just like the one he made for me so I can tell exactly how much fluid is in that fancy milled tank which you hate.
I bet it need re-bled.

Did you put the new thermostat in because it was overheating, or did it start after you put it in?
If it started overheating after then like everyone else said probably not bled good enough, or not enough antifreeze.
Im guessing your fan isn't working though since it cools down once you start moving again.
There is a huge thread on the low speed fan resistor blowing. Seems like almost mini has a problem with it.
Another thing to check is your fuses. My f5 fuse under the hood was blown and prevented the fan from working. Power steering fan was jammed and blew the fuse.

Just remembered..buzzsaw is out of pocket for a major project the next few days so his response may be delayed.

I had something similar when i bought my r53. Like everyone else says, test your fan resistors first. And then try getting air out of your system. If none of that really works (probably will find the culprit there), you can always try replacing the coolant cap. My car kept overheating, i replaced the cap after reading a thread here, and bam no more overheating. Coolant caps usually dont fail, but its always a possibility.
