For the past week my car has been making a strange noise on startup. Sounds like a belt to me, but oddly seems to be coming from the driver's side. Any ideas on what it could be? You'll need to turn the volume up to hear it.

Maybe it just sneezes the snow out of the scoop when it starts up?

 

Without looking at the car, it almost sounds like the starter bendix isn't retracting after startup.

 

That sounds like the starter plunger gear grinding on the flywheel. Kind of a long shot, but it may be that the plunger retracts after it starts and then goes back in a couple times after its started and tries to mesh back to the flywheel, but the engine is spinning too fast for it at that point and it can't mesh so it just makes that screeching noise. Could be a faulty over-running clutch assembly on the gear, I'm not sure.
