Rust...

My '06 R53 has paint bubbling/rust starting under left side tail light -- just that one location. Car is otherwise mint. Has anyone else experienced this or know of similar problems? Thanks

I agree get it fixed, not sure how well the dealer will fix it but if it's free why not. It will eventually look like this if not. Mine was just started when I bought the car 6 years ago.

My 2006 is in the shop now. They are going to replace both rear quarter panels and the drivers door and it will be covered by MINI's rust warranty. They said they didn't see any rust on the passenger door so they looked inside and there was no rust there either so it is not being replaced.

My MCS is a daily driver always kept outside, but I have kept the paint in very good shape. I am concerned about mismatching paint, but better to have a rust free car. It is also sad to lose the drivers door since in all this time I've had the MCS (since new), I've kept it door ding free. Time marches on.

So takes yours in to the dealer.

This service in the exact same spot was done on the car just before I purchased a month ago.

Looks flawless to me on a pepper white.

My 03 is just starting to get this too. Also it looks like when the previous owner had this done the paint was not matched properly.
1) Will this still be warranted for my 03?
2) will they re-do the paint match that was done wrong?

Any MINI build date Jan1/2004+ has a 12 year rust warranty.

My car is also in the shop having the work done.

Unlimited miles, unlimited owners.

The catch: any touch ups to the area, or NON-MINI repair work done to the affected panel can/will void the warranty.

Mine is also getting 2 new rear quarters + both doors being done.

Pre-04 cars are out of warranty.

03+ previous paint work = no luck for you

So, as the 3rd owner of my '06 I can still bring it to a MINI dealer if I find rust and they will repair it?

as long as the panel you find rust on
a) has never been hit/accident
b) never been painted by a shop OTHER THEN BMW/MINI
c) stock tail lights/mouldings/etc are in tact
d) not been touched up/etc.

Should be good to go!

Just got my 04 MCS back from the dealer. RR quarter panel, rear hatch & left door were replaced under warranty. I had the bonnet & front bumper resprayed at the same time to get rid of the numerous rock chips that accumulate over 12 years of ownership. The car looks great! Check if a loaner will be provided, my dealer let me drive a 2015 MCS for the month that my car was out of service.

Good thread here for info. 7/2004+ have the extended rust warranty. Some other locations to check also are listed.

Hi all,

I'm having a rust through issue too, on my 2003 MCS. It's come through on the LR around the tail light, it's bubbling on the RR, and just above the trim on the rear hatch above the license plate. Does anyone know if the warranty has run out on my '03 in this year of 2016? I suspect I know the answer, and I'm not a big fan of stealerships anyway and would probably contemplate doing the work myself. Having said that, has anyone done this repair themselves with success? Are there repair panels available, versus sourcing the panels at a junk yard? Thanks for your help...

Cheers,

Tom

No...car is Well beyond the rust warrenty period....it was extended to 10 years for 2005+ cars...but most of those are even string out now....I'd price it out at a couple body shops...dealers just subcontract the work out anyway....
As for a diy fix...all comes down to skill....a body shop fix would involve cutting out the part, welding in a new part, and painting.

Its in the thread above posted, before 7/2004 the rust warranty was much shorter. You are out of warranty on that from the date. I would get the new parts of the panel, they are in that thread linked above, if you get them from the junk yard they may already have rust

Can anyone provide me with the extended rust warranty details in PDF format or anything? The hyperlinks above seem to be dead now. I have rust perforations under my taillights of my 2005 R53 and contacted the dealership recently, but they told me that they cannot find any info in their system of this warranty.

My links above and the door sill PDF still shows.

Here is the warranty booklet for 2002+ , you can see in 2005 it went to 12 yrs unlimited.

Which dealership did you call ? Call MINI of Warwick, they did mine for rust at rear of left tail light and have done at least 3 others I'm aware of, including rust on bottom of D/P doors.
