Has anyone done a gauge for intercooler temp delta?

Hello all,

I have just recently got a 2006 MCS, and like everything I own, I don't feel it's mine until I mod it. One of the mods I would like to do is add a dual temperature gauge to measure temp delta from my intercooler. Here is the gauge I have in mind, it can be set to match the OEM backlights, and it has two needles, one for inlet temp, one for outlet temp.

http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/white...ure-gauge.aspx

I also plan on getting a boost gauge of the same series from them to match. I really like that this gauge has two needles, as opposed to most temp delta gauges having two digital readouts. It seems a very good match for the interior of my MCS.

I am just curious if anyone has installed anything similar on theirs, from what I can tell I should be able to just drill and tap a hole in the manifolds coming to and from the intercooler? My only concern then is the thickness of the aluminum. Worst case I could weld/braze/other a bung onto it.

At any rate, I was just looking for some ideas on how best to do this cleanly, I figure the more ideas I consider before doing it the better my install will be.

Thank you everyone for your time!
Matt

Sure you can do that. People install methanol spray jets in the horns of the intercooler.

years old, but:

I've seen threads before, IIRC, they just tapped the horns.

Awesome! Is there a preferred place? Or can I just go with somewhere easy to hide the wires? (back or underside of horns, depending on the clearance required of the temp probes)

should be able to do it anywhere post and pre intercooler depending on how you want to hide them, although, I don't know how sensitive those probes are, so I wouldn't mount them on the underside of the horns

neat idea!
closest ive come is just reading outside air temp and mentally calculating post IC temp via torque app.
i stopped after a while, because i noticed it usually ran the same; around 140 to 160 intake temps; possibly more if i womped on it, then it would drop fairly quickly

photodocument your install!

Where do you live getting intake temps usually around 140-160? The only time I see those kinds of numbers is when I'm parked in traffic or beating on it. Otherwise at cruise it runs about 12-15 degrees over ambient. Like when it's 80 outside I see about 94 after the intercooler. And I have a 17% on it. Your blower could be on its way out as well.

I'm not too familiar with superchargers but I assume that you have a diverter valve (or waste gate type valve) to not boost when it's not needed, if that is the case then isn't cruising temperatures kind of irrelevant because your driving in "naturally aspirated" mode. Temperatures are only really important during boost situations, otherwise they should be close to ambient.

The blower is always spinning therefore always making heat. Yes there's a bypass valve that opens the loop or closes the loop to make boost. It never vents out of the system though.

I got a chance to hammer on mine a little today. Still didn't get it up to 150, 130 maybe. I spin to 7300. I even left it in 4th and cruised at 4k just to see what it did. Temps went down.
