R50/53 Coolant Change Advice
Coolant Change Advice
Want to change out my coolant.
Previous owner put in green coolant and I want to go back to the factory blue type.
However, my car has nearly 100k on it and was wondering if I should suck it up and change out water pump, thermostat, supercharger oil, etc...
Significant labor difference between just changing coolant to changing out everything although I'd be doing it myself.
Advice? Thoughts?
Thanks

My thought....
If everything is working fine...
Flush and fill...
Mini/BMW OEM is fine...heck priced about the same as aftermarket in my area....no reason not to use it.
Having green coolant as long as it was fresh and changed regularly will not hurt anything.
Now if you are wanting to "freshen" the car up and change stuff...feel free...
My thought....
It would suck to change out the water pump...just to rip it out in 10,000 more miles to do the sc...freshening stuff up is a slippery slope....
I have read so many stories of well meaning owners getting in too deep with diy projects...and them having tons of issues...if you are VERY comfortable working on your car....you plan on keeping it, and have the $$ to spend, do it.....but remember....a clutch may go tomorrow, so don't spend all your cash on "feel good" preemptive repairs....

I agree that maybe just R&R the coolant may be the way to go since it's so inexpensive.
Then deal with anything breaking later.
I'm just a preventative maintenance guy but getting to that water pump and thermostat seems like a PITA and since the supercharger has to come off I thought I'd do the oil in there too.
But believe me, I much prefer working on my Mercedes than my wife's Mini any day! LOL!

I just changed out my supercharger and here is my findings. My car only has 68K miles.
The supercharger was making noise and had no SC fluid in it(SC is dead)
The water pump was notchy when spinning it(I can only imagine it was on it's way out)
The belt tensioner's bushing on the top was missing.( Any day the strut was going to fall off)
So as much as the coolant is an easy fix, I found a lot wrong for 68K miles
It's not a hard job just time consuming.
But that is just me.

Like some others have advised, I'd just do the coolant change. Your pump, supercharger, etc. may fail but not for years and many miles. Start saving money for future repairs and the pain will be lessened when things do go bad.
But with nearly 100k on it those parts are probably on their way out. And with out using lubricating coolant it could definitely shorten the life of the pump. Also waiting until failure could easily result in a trashed motor. Someone driving along and not watching the gauges could definitely overheat it and not know how long it's been too hot.
I changed my water pump and blower at 100k. Both needed replacing.

@rennwerkes: If you review several of the sc threads, you will find that 100k miles seems to be a logical point to do the sc oil change. That may drive your decision on the water pump change (pumps are pretty cheap for the amount of effort to r&r at a later date). You will find once you go down the sc route, there are several gaskets and misc. things to do while tackling that job. As a note of comparison, my sc had plenty of fluid at 100k, but many do not per the threads.
