Gas Mileage?

Looks like my MCS R53 has been averaging 20.7mpg. 90% city driving with an average speed of 24.1.

Is that about normal? It has 92k on it. I'm not the primary driver so I didn't know.

Varries lots.....mostly due to driving habits from what I have seen...and mods to the car...
While I can hit 30 MPG in near 100% highway, mid 25 is a better average in mixed...so about 21 in 90% city seems pretty good!

I get about 28 on average, a lot of country roads. Like zippy days definitely varies, mods can actually increase mpg. Also depends on which year it is because the gear ratios make a difference.

I have averaged 22mpg the last few tanks. Appr. 250 miles a tank. 2003 R53 86k miles. I'm gonna do a tune up at 90k miles and see if that helps.

Avg at 30 miles a gallon in all kinds of driving. 2005 JCW. Live in Montana with a lot of passes to go over then open twisties. Great driving.

Thanks for the responses. I would've though that these cars would fair better. My 135i with twin turbo six gets better mileage!

I have a header, exhaust, pulley and intake to go on asap. Maybe thise will help a bit. She drives fairly conservatively.

Oh yeah forgot to say it's an R53 with the 6 speed automatic

A car with a turbo as opposed to a SC tends to get about 25%+ mpg......having a sc is great, but it does have a price!! The fact that gen1 cars are pretty heavy, with a cast iron block and near vertical windshield does not help much.....
The gen2 cars with a turbo and sloped Windshields do much better...but IMO are not as fun driving dynamics wise....

My current tank is showing 19.3mpg US, all city including running the A/C, and a train crossing or two. That's with aftermarket exhaust, 15% pulley and new plugs and air filter. I usually get around 22 mpg when the traffic isn't as bad.

06 r53 manual 117k miles. Fresh built motor, cam, pulley, tune. I average 20mpg with a majority of the miles on the freeway cruising. Average speed per tank 26-33mph. The warmup seems to be what's killing my mileage.

That's one thing I wondered. She doesn'y let it warm up like ever before she drives it. Makes me want to throw Slick 50 in it but that just shows my age!

So I guess the goal gere will just be to not worry about miles per gallon, and just concentrate on smiles per mile!

i dont let it warm up either, but i dont get on it till shes warm.

i get like 22-23 mpg with an avg of 34 mph or so. so ya, you seem like your in the ball park. i agree, its sitting at stop lights for minutes on end that kills mileage; you can watch the avg mpg counter go down as you sit. its about 0.3 mpg every 30 seconds or so.

112k, 17%, exhaust, ect ect.

I actually have forged pistons so I have to let it sit and warm up before I even move. It's about 5min every time I go anywhere unless it was a short stop. And I have to keep out of boost until the oil is up to temp. After that it is good to go for whatever I want to throw at it. And once I can do a head and header I can really spin it, rev limit is only 7200 now.

Mine has 126,000 currently and i was getting 28 by the onboard mileage calculator. I just changed my belt tensioner and am now getting much better mileage above 30. Another Mini owner has experienced the same increase when he changed his belt tensioner too. I imagine it has something to do with the supercharger running more efficiently?

I average around 28, doesn't every r53 have forged internals?

No warm up needed....syenthic oils are a HUGE help here...and IMO keep that slick50/astroglide crap in the bedroom...lol...no good comes from adding stuff to the oil that is sold on late night TV....
Start up and drive...gently for a few miles, then you are fine to get your foot into it...
Yup...the r53 has always been more about smiles per mile than mpg!!!

I am not sure about the rest of the rotating assembly but I know the pistons aren't forged, they are cast. Mine are not OEM.

Yeah I was joking about the Slick 50. I didn't even know they made it anymore. We used to pour it in any $200 car we had in highschool.

I once had a Vega that had 300k on the original motor and I ran nothing but Slick 50 in it!

Mine consistently averages between 31 and 34 MPG per tank. The lowest tank average was 29 MPG and the highest tank average was 36 MPG. The majority of the driving is at highway speeds.

Mods on my car that probably affect the fuel economy:
  • M7 air intake system.
  • Helix 15% supercharger pulley and Gates K060539 serpentine belt.
  • NGK BKR7EQUP (4285) spark plugs and NGK 54058 spark plug cables.
  • Continental ExtremeContact DWS 205/45ZR17 tires (not run-flats), usually inflated somewhere between 31 and 34 PSI.
Also the windows are usually closed with lots of AC usage in the warm/hot weather, and lots of heated seat(s) usage in the cool/cold weather.

hah, i never see those values, i get about 31 at best doing 55-60. i get about 28 combined spirited driving, i only have a 7 mile commute that has about 3-4 stops. i also dont ussually let it warm up unless its under 60 deg, then ill wait for coolant temp to hit 100 deg, which is where the idle drops. when ill never go above 2k rpm and never come close to 0 vacuum

How are you all getting these mpg numbers? Do you use the throttle at all? One time in the last 8 years did I see 31mpg out of a tank, it was pure highway for 300+ miles. Even when I just had a pulley and barely let it warm it up I got an average of about 24. And that was mostly freeway.

I drive my 06 MCS every day to work, I don't encounter too much traffic on the way to work, and I'm averaging 26 mph, and that's running 93 octane. When I went to PA a couple of months ago, I got 33 mph coming home.

I've kept gas mileage records on my 2002 MCS since buying it new. Low was 17 MPG in stop-go traffic (averaged 15 MPH for the tank) and as high as 34 MPG cruising on the highway.

My MCS has a JCW Tuning Kit (including 380cc injectors and airbox) fitted.
