R50/53 My RMW dyno tune results
My RMW dyno tune results
I got my MINI dyno tuned by Jan on Saturday. It made 209 whp and 181 torque.
The weather conditions were cold and humid. The tune made a nice difference. The car runs better and feels much faster. It feels like it has way more torque in the mid range and is more fun to drive. It freakin' rips at full throttle!
Big thanks to c0op3r for setting up the event.
Modifications to the car:
RMW Street Cam
RMW Street Header
RMW dyno tune
RMW 450cc fuel injectors
Invidia Catback exhaust
Alta 17% supercharger pulley
Alta intake
JCW spark plugs
I posted a youtube a video of the dyno pull here:

It was a Dynojet.
My exhaust decided to start blowing out it's fiberglass a couple days prior to the tune. I didn't think it was much of a big deal. But when we had the wideband sensor in the left muffler it was giving a lean air/fuel reading. Jan switched sides and the ratio went to where it should be. When looking at the exhaust tips you can see the inside of the left one is coated in far more fiberglass than the right side. Plenty of air comes out of both sides though.

very cool man good job. can you go into more detail on the tuning. what did they actually do to your ecu. did they take it out or just go right into obd2 port and start tuning. did you have to buy a special ecu? or oem is used and modified. did the tuner adjust parameters or upload a file and was done. where is the tuning place and how much do they charge for a tune. thanks
Quick
Thats a pretty cool video.

The car is run on the Dyno and the AFR is read, then the ECU is reprogrammed via the OBDII port to make it more in line with stoichiometric ratio.
Each car has its own parameters that are best, and when you add things like more boost, bigger injectors and more free flowing exhaust, that ratio changes. The tune takes advantage of all those changes and tailors what the computer does to your setup.
It was done by Jan from RMW, he flew in from CA to Orlando Fl to tune 14 Cars for us, and Quick Drove up from Miami for the tune.

awsome..thanks for the reply..i understand how the tuning works but just wasnt sure what needs to be done to the ecu. im used to honda tuning which involves soldering chips into the ecu in order for you to burn a new chip and have it set inside the ecu. are our minis like that too? or just stick your obd2 cable in and start tuning.
ALL Mini's 2002 up are programmed through the OBDII port, but the newest ones are not 'cracked' yet so there is no tune for those, there is a box that can be added in (JB+) that is not a tune but tricks the computer.
There are also canned tunes for the 1st Gen MINI's but they are not suggested (Shark Tuner). If you must have a canned tune, get a programmer from Way or RMW and tell them what you have on your MINI and they can send a tune and programmer that is much closer to a custom tune for you.
There is no chip soldering for us!

hate to jack this thread and ask questions but last one. does the tuner add his program called xxxxxabc123 or does he customize the bmw software that the mini comes programed with. for instance when i had my honda tuned the tuner made the ecu run a different program called ectune it no longer had honda inside the ecu. what happens to our mini cooper ecus on the inside. do they change or stay bmw. thanks
No, custom modifications to the BMW software. (this is why you don't see BMW/Mini tuners around every corner)
And those numbers aren't really low on the DynoJet, it's typically the most unforgiving (on avg. you'll see about 10-13"%" lower #'s than on the DynoPack, hub type dyno), important part is that if you make any changes to use the same dyno to get the best comparison.

To add to BlwnAway's comments - there is firmware that can be loaded on the DME/ECU that will over write the BMW/MINI software, and enable you to program it just like on the Honda and other cars.
Problem is that its not fully baked yet, and they ECU will eventually adapt, and programmed wrong it WILL eat the motor!
There are several threads on this forum about this.
