After Market Seats and that Damn Airbag Light

I have done a hell of a lot of research on this and I really need to find the easiest solution on how to turn off the airbag light after installing new after market Cipher Auto seats (I will post pics later if interested). Of course the new seats do not have any adapter to plug in to the airbag sensor, so that is why I am needing help. I have heard a seat occupancy sensor from ebay would work (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bypass-For-MINI-COOPER-2002-2005-Seat-Occupancy-Sensor-Mat-Airbag-Light-Emulator-/161065579011?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item258041b203&vxp=mtr) Is this true???? Other say that I have to soder resistors and go that direction. I am handy, but not that handy to soder anything in something that might set off the air bags.

HELP PLEASE!!!

Thanks all!

BTW this is off of my '03 MCS and all the threads I have been reading have been from '05. Really nothing recent.

Thanks for the help everyone.

well, he sold 8 of them. hopefully one of 8 who got one is a NAMer!

looks like it gives some sort of resistance or something. maybe you can measure the sensor for the oem seat when you sit in it, see if it changes, then simulate that...
you have a volt / multi meter?

You need to do 2 things...
One ...
Add a resistor to Seat plug...usually soldered in..then
Reset the light....
In that order....

What type of resistor? Can I just tape it in? Meaning electrical tape around the plug. How do I go about resetting the light. I have read that mini has to do it. Is that true?

The connection must be PERFECT just hitting a bump will set a new light... And you must pay $$ to get the light reset...m

A search should yield the right ohm rating of the resistor...maybe somebody will chime in...it has been in several threads over the years....

If I recall properly, 3.3-3.9ohms should fool the MINI SRS. Try searching over at minitorque. Had you disconnected the batt, removed the SRS fuse in the footwell prior to doing the swap, the airbag light would still be on but no codes will be stored. So, once the right airbag fooling resistors are plugged in snuggly & secured, reinstallation of the SRS fuse would have reactivated the system but, w/o the light on.
Now, you'll need those resistors & a BMW specific airbag code reading/clearing tool such as a B200. Or the dealership.

Yeah.. I was dumb when I did it thinking that I could just unplug it and install that ebay adapter I posted up above. Guess that is not the case. So from what I am reading and hearing I have to buy resistors and have mini reset the code. There is not way to buy that adapter from Ebay and go that route. Just trying to keep it simple.

That eBay link is to a sensor that plugs into a 2005+ gen1 car seat with a weight sensor...different issue...light still be needed....but it gets rid of the light for folks with the OEM seats or who installed earlier seats that don't have the weight sensor or had it fail...
2005+ production cars have dual stage airbags....so they also have a weight sensor....

Simple would have been unplug battery....remove the seats..., plug in a wire with the resistor soldered in...install new seats... Reconnect battery. No light good to go.

Plugging the resistor & securely taping it to the terminal should be good. Soldering to a wire plugged into the terminal is also brilliant.

2+ years old, but figured I'd revive this one, as opposed to a new thread...

I removed the stock seats, and installed only a driver side aftermkt one. I purchased two, but have just one installed for now...

I also removed the passenger side belt receptacle, with the blue connector. Anyone know what resistor is needed for that one? I'm getting a code 61 for that I'm unable to clear. I tried the resistor that works great for the seat, to no avail...

Thanks much.

Edit / Add: After some reading, the tensioner with the blue connector seems to use the same resistor to defeat the light, so good news there...

Easy fix

Ok simple you need two resistors of 1 ohm jam them into the airbag connector under the seat..

Problem solved.

I am getting ready to do this. Both OEM seats are out and one race seat installed. I have resistors in-hand and ordered the seat-side pigtails to end up with a clean set-up, assuming the resistors work. I'll post in my thread.

Make sure you have an odb2 scanner to reset the airbag light but otherwise here is a link to a video with all the info you'll need including resistance etc..

Got 'em from ebay. I ordered passenger side for $20. Searched again and found the driver's side for $20 and another seller had both for $31. Link is here. I looked to cancel the order for one and get two for $9 less, but could not figure that out so put in another order for the driver's side. Getting both for $40, but you can still get the good deal

Bought a box of low ohm resistors. I know it has 1 and 2.2 ohm and whatever the next in sequence is. I'll take on this project in the next week or two.

the right way to do this is with ncsexpert and turn off the airbag or seat sensor depending on needs

Does that turn off the airbag warning light for all of the airbags, or can you turn off warnings for just the seat ones?

you can turn off whatever you need, seat side driver, seat side pass, pass seat mat sensor, side curtains, or the battery disconnect every detonator has a option in the module that can be turned off

Old thread but good info so posting my question here with the hopes to some help.

First, in this thread I see some conflicting info. A big part of it is early gen 1s didn't have a passenger seat occupancy sensor so a simple resistor for the airbag should work. The later gen1s you will also need a emulator to fool the passenger occupancy sensor.

I have an '05 with the passenger seat occupancy sensor. I bought an emulator and resistor and all is good. Everything functions with no lights. However the emulator stops the MINI from going to sleep mode and I am discharging my battery within a few days of non use. It took a little sleuthing to determine this was the cause, but with the emulator unplugged, the draw drops to 5mA within 20 minutes of locking the car whereas with the emulator plugged in the car stays awake indefinitely I believe it thinks someone is in the car.

So as I am weighing my options the above post I quoted is very interesting. Does this tool allow you to choose what items keep the car from going to sleep? Could I just tell the car to stop checking the passenger seat sensor when off? Or would it be off when the car is on also? My preference is that the the car thinks someone is in that seat when the car is running so that in an accident that airbag would fire vs the car believing the seat is empty permanently. Thanks in advance..

I’m pretty sure that’s how it works when you shut off the sensor in software. The airbag light above the windshield never illuminates in my car now.
