R50/53 BPV/Shut off valve
BPV/Shut off valve
I have an 03 MCS and while driving it last week noticed that I had lost a lot of power. It appears that the SC BPV/shut off valve has failed. So me being me I ty-rapped the thing closed. Worked like a champ. power is back. So I called the dealer, they have to order the part. It won't be in until Sept 17th
. So my question is, can I run this thing with the BPV wired shut and if I do will it damage the engine or the SC?

You will be fine with a wired shut...
You may see a loss of mpg...1 or so, but should not have any issues.... Wiring the valve shut will mean when the engine is at low/idle RPM's, you will be using the the sc, rather than venting the boost to save a bit of fuel...by getting off boost when idling/low rpm you save fuel....
Kinda amazed they did not have one sitting on the shelf....

Pre 2004 cars had the weak spring installed in the bpv...and the computer would have issues as the valve was kinda fluttering almost closed just as the car was switching over to boosted operation....result was a yo-yo...kinda almost the result feedback ....the fix..though not perfect seemed to be a stronger spring in the bpv....
But they do age...springs do fail, the seating surface for the valve does wear....
I kinda suspect you dealer is newer...so it us likely there are not many sc'd cars running around that they matain/sell parts for....
The dealer has been their since 02. I think that they have just slowly phased out the older mini parts. Every time I go there I get a lecture about how much better the new mini's are. Sorry but I ain't buying it. I just can't get into a car with a French engine.
Funny how they are the only once liking that motor...(guess they make lots of $$ fixing them under warrenty...
)
even MINI/BMW is ending it (use of the motor and the pugot partnership)...it has had so many issues.....
My local mechanic says it is a disposable motor...junk...other items on the car seem to be made very cheaply too...plastic parts that seem to be off a salad bar..thickness/durability wise...
