Yep... you can't get a car to shine to it's potential unless you have clean paint to start with.
You going to polish it using a machine when you're done claying ?
And hey, if it makes you feel better, the first time you do it is the hardest. Do it at least every six months after that it it will be easier, not as much gunk to remove.

Thanks. But don't expect that kind of reflection unless you have a jet black or midnight black MINI. You just can't get that kind of reflection out of other colors even if you spend a million years claying and polishing.
But even with a lighter colored car, you can get a great looking finish.
To give you a more reasonable expectation, here's my CR R50s after an 8 hour detailing project:
